摘要： A PCMCIA antenna (10) for wireless communications is provided which provides the performance of a 1/2 wave antenna used for wireless communication, both transmission and receiving, on PCMCIA and other platforms for wireless data communications. The antenna comprises a housing (16) which is adapted to be secured and supported by the host device and comprises a housing including housing members (18, 20) which are ultrasonically welded together. A flexible circuit board (30) is provided in the housing which serves as the lower radiating element. A coaxial cable (12) extends into the housing (16) and has its braid soldered to the lower radiating element so that the same serves as a counterpoise for the antenna (10). The center wire (36) of the coaxial cable (12) is connected by a flexible trace to a flexible printed circuit board (26) which is encased in an insulated sheath (24) which forms the upper radiating element. The upper radiating element is pivotally secured to the housing (16) so that the upper radiating element may be moved to a stowed position wherein it is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing (16), where it may be pivotally moved upwardly with respect to the housing to a 90 degree angle with respect to the housing.

摘要： A portable radio package comprises a radio unit (12) consisting of a WLAN radio, a controller and, where necessary, an auxiliary battery, mounted in a box which is held in a portable case (13). The case also receives a coupling means (20), which may be a flat PCMCIA plug, for coupling the radio unit to a computer (21) (e.g a palm-top or personal digital assistant computer). The case may comprise front and back leaves (14, 15) hinged together, the rear leaf (15) serving to hold the radio unit and the front leaf (14) serving to receive the coupling means in, for example, a credit-card -sized pocket (22). The coupling means is attached to the radio unit by cable (19) and is meant for insertion into a personal computer when the radio is in use. One or more antennae may be mounted on the back leaf as flat antennae, or along one or more sides of the box as dipole antennae. The case may be a padded leather case, preferably a standard diary case, which is small enough to be stored in a jacket pocket when the radio is not in use. When it is desired to use the radio, the case is taken out and opened up and the plug is removed from the front leaf and inserted into the computer. Data may then be typed or written into the computer and transmitted by the radio at will.

摘要： A direct connect antenna includes a passive patch-type antenna 12 mounted to a radio 14, wherein the need for and use of a coaxial cable extension arrangement is eliminated. Thus, the characteristic impedances of the load and source can be better matched, resulting in lower reflection and distributed losses. The antenna 12 is formed with guide slots 40 and 42 for alignment and simple snap-on connection of the antenna 12 to the radio 14 to prevent coaxial connector mismatch and damage. The radio 14 may be directly affixed and electrically coupled to a PCMCIA compliant interface card 16 which is insertable into a host computer. Accordingly, radio signals received by the direct connect antenna and radio arrangement are processed through the PC card 16 and the computer.
