Systems and related accessing methods for remote unit assemblies for distributed communications systems are provided. A support member (e.g., a support plate) is arranged to be mounted in a drop ceiling grid, and a pivotally mounted pivot arm arranged above the support plate is configured to receive at least one electronic component. The pivot arm allows the electronic component to pivot downwardly from a ceiling structure for easier access. A slow release mechanism is configured to reduce a rate of pivotal motion of the pivot arm. A retention mechanism selectively retains the electronic component in a substantially horizontal position proximate to the support plate. A vented antenna cover below the support plate is pivotally mounted to the electronic component with at least one pivotal link, and may include an integrated antenna.

A method and corresponding apparatus are provided for network configuration selection in a wireless network comprising a plurality of nodes. A subset of the nodes are configured to simultaneously participate in a sounding process, in which a node of the subset omni-directionally transmits a predetermined signal and in which other nodes of the subset of nodes sample the predetermined signal as received by an omni-directional antenna array of that node. Measurement reports are received from the subset of nodes, each measurement report comprising a signal source angle and a received signal strength. A path loss is determined in dependence on each measurement report to generate a set of path losses covering a plurality of transmitter node receiver node pairs. Then a directional configuration is selected for a directional antenna of each node of the subset of nodes for data transmission in dependence on the set of path losses.

An antenna apparatus operates as a base station in a wireless network, with a method configuring a transmission beam within such antenna apparatus. The antenna apparatus has a rotatable antenna assembly employing selected transmission beam patterns, and a controller to rotate the antenna assembly altering its azimuth direction. During configuration mode, a sweep operation rotates the antenna assembly to selected azimuth directions. Quality metric determination circuitry determines, for each selected azimuth direction, a link quality metric for wireless terminals based on communication between the wireless terminals and the base station whilst the rotatable antenna assembly is at that selected azimuth direction. Transmission beam determination circuitry determines, from the link quality metrics determined for the wireless terminals at each selected azimuth direction, both a transmission beam pattern and an azimuth direction for subsequent communication with the wireless terminals. The antenna apparatus efficiently self-configures its transmission beam pattern and azimuth direction.
