Beschrieben wird ein Vorschaltgerät für eine Hochdruckgasentladungslampe in einem Kraftfahrzeug mit einem primärgetakteten Gleichspannungswandler, bestehend aus einem Wandlertransformator, einem primärseitigen Wandlerschalter (Schalttransistor) und einer sekundärseitigen Gleichrichterschaltung, einer dem Gleichspannungswandler nachgeschalteten H-Brückenschaltung und einer Zündschaltung, einem Pulsweitenmodulator, dessen Ausgangssignal am Steuereingang des primärseitigen Wandlerschalters anliegt, und einem Regler, dessen Regelgröße am Eingang des Pulsweitenmodulators anliegt und die Pulsweite des vom Pulsweitenmodulator erzeugten Ausgangssignals bestimmt. Um ein besonders sicheres Zünden der Hochdruckgasentladungslampe auch bei verringerter Betriebsspannung zu erzielen, steuert der Regler die Pulsweite des vom Pulsweitenmodulator erzeugten Ausgangssignal abhängig von der Höhe der Betriebsspannung, und zwar derart, daß mit fallender Betriebsspannung die Leerlaufausgangsspannung des Gleichspannungswandlers ansteigt.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Herstellen einer Anzeigeröhre (30) für Anzeigezwecke, insbesondere zum Einsatz in Lichtwerbeanlagen mit folgenden Schritten: In einem ersten Schritt wird ein mit einem Leuchtstoff beschlämmmtes Glasrohr manuell in eine beliebige Form (32) gebogen. In einem zweiten Schritt werden Wendelelektroden an den Enden (34) des verformten Glasrohrs eingschmolzen, wobei eine Wendelelektrode mit einem Pumpstutzen versehen ist. In einem dritten Schritt wird das Glasrohr durch externe Energiezuführung zur Oxidation störender Bestandteile der Anzeigeröhre und zur Unterstützung der Formierung der Wendelelektroden abwechselnd erhitzt und über den Pumpstutzen mit Spülgasen gespült. In einem nächsten Schritt wird das Glasrohr mit zumindest einem Gas oder einem Gasgemisch gefüllt, anschließend der Pumpstutzen vom Glasrohr abgeschmolzen und schließlich das Glasrohr eingebrannt. Die Erfindung betrifft weiterhin eine nach diesem Verfahren hergestellte Anzeigeröhre sowie ein System aus einem Vorschaltgerät und einer derartigen Anzeigeröhre. Sie umfaßt weiterhin ein Verfahren zum Betreiben einer derartigen Anzeigeröhre (30).

A fail safe power supply system specially adapted for supplying power to devices such as lights (4). A battery (3) is provided to supply power to the devices (4), and during normal operation, charge on the battery (3) is maintained within selected levels by a charging control system (5) that is connected to a source of commercial power (1). During a commercial power outage, the battery (3) continues to supply normal power to the devices (4) for a prolonged period of time, usually until commercial power (1) is restored, thus obviating the necessity for a separate backup power source.

A light-source lamp unit 100 includes a light-source lamp unit 1 detachably mounted, and CPU 101 constituting drive and control means for the light-source lamp unit. CPU 101 senses the lamp information borne by lamp-information storing block 5 in the light-source lamp unit 1, about a lamp power rating, lamp life and whether a lamp is new or not, and starts counting operation time when the lamp is lit. CPU 101 compares the lamp life sensed and the operation time count, and forces the lamp to extinguish when the life of the light-source lamp expires. Prior to this action, CPU 101 gives a warning display at a time that is earlier than the life expiration of the lamp by a fixed duration of time, to warn that a lamp replacement is needed. Since the lamp-information storing block 5 in the light-source lamp unit 1 stores the information about the lamp type and characteristics of the lamp, the light-source device 100 can properly drive the lamp to light it and determine the lamp life even when a light-source lamp unit of a different type is used.

A high intensity discharge lamp (10) without mercury is disclosed radiating a selected spectrum of which can be almost entirely in the visible range from an envelope that contains a sulfur containing substance. The lamp utilizes a signal source (20) that generates an excitation signal that is externally coupled to the exterior surface of the envelope (10) to excite the enclosed sulfur containing substance. Various embodiments of the lamp (10) use electrodes (14, 14') adjacent the envelope (10) to couple the excitation signal (20) thereto with the face of the electrodes (14, 14') shaped to complement the shape of the exterior surface of the envelope (10). Two shapes discussed are spherical (10') and cylindrical (10'''). To minimize filamentary discharges each envelope (10) may include an elongated stem (12) affixed to the exterior thereof whereby a rotational subsystem spins the envelope (10). In yet another embodiment the envelope (10''') has a Dewar configuration with two electrodes (32, 34), one positioned near the external curved side surface of the body, and a second to the inner surface of the hole through the envelope. Further, the envelope may contain a backfill of a selected inert gas to assist in the excitation of the lamp with that backfill at a pressure of less than 1 atmosphere.

An improved energizing circuit for starting and regulating a gaseous discharge lamp. The circuit is 100% solid state and does not require the use of any inductive components or any fil aments for its proper operation. The circuit is made up of several subcircuits including a rectifying/voltage-doubling circuit, a second multiplying circuit, a low power oscillating circuit and a high voltage amplifier circuit. A high frequency AC signal is used to ionize the gas and ignite the lamp, while a DC signal is generated by the circuit to keep the lamp illuminated once it is ignited. The size and weight of the integrated circuit ballast are such that it could be incorporated into the fluorescent lamp package itself.

The network (13) performs two preselected impedance transformations and provides a filtering function to attenuate harmonics of an electrical signal delivered at an input of the network. The network (13) may advantageously be structured in the form of balanced dual filters which are referenced to a virtual ground between them, the virtual ground being connected to a shield which surrounds the electric components. The network (13) is particularly suitable for use with electrodeless discharge lamps (15) to provide an impedance matching function for the induction coil (14) and to limit RFI.

A passive, resonant starting circuit for an electrodeless HID lamp (10) includes a starting coil (Lst) that is shielded from stray capacitances that would otherwise result in detuning the resonant circuit and hence decreasing efficiency. The starting circuit (40) further includes a capacitance (Csts) coupled in series with the starting coil (Lst) and another capacitance (Cstp) coupled in parallel with the coil (Lst). In a preferred embodiment, the starting coil (Lst) is enclosed in a conductive cylindrical housing (42) which functions as both a shield from external capacitances and the resonant capacitance in parallel with the starting coil (Lst). The housing (42) has a lengthwise gap (44) in order to prevent the housing (42) from acting as a short circuit secondary with respect to the starting coil (Lst). A conductive disk (46) is mounted to the ground end of the housing (42) to increase shielding even further. The parallel resonant capacitance is determined by the length of the housing (42) and the distance between the coil (Lst) and the housing (42).

A passive starting circuit (14) for an electrodeless HID lamp (10) includes a series resonant LC circuit including an inductor (Lr) of variable impedance coupled in series with the parasitic capacitance (C1) between a starting probe (12) and the excitation coil (18) of the lamp (10), and further including a coupling capacitance (Cd) for directly coupling the starting circuit (14) to the excitation coil (18). The coupling capacitance (Cd) is connected between the high terminal of the excitation coil (18), or a point in the circuit at approximately the same potential thereof, and a conductive support (40) for holding the lamp (10) and starting probe (12) in a lamp fixture. In this way, the starting voltage is maximized for more efficient and rapid starting. Preferably, the series resonant capacitance of the starting circuit (14) is optimized so that the ballast (20) requires little, if any, retuning after the lamp (10) has started.
