The sheet of gel material may be cast on a molding surface, wherein the sheet of gel material may be longer than the molding surface on which the sheet of gel material was cast. The sheet of aerogel material may be formed by drying the continuous sheet of gel material which was cast on the molding surface. The invention further comprises a roll comprising the continuous sheet of gel or aerogel material in a plurality of layers, wherein the roll may comprise a separator layer. Such gel sheets can be used in manufacturing aerogel blankets used in a variety of applications including thermal and acoustic insulation.

The present invention provides a process for manufacturing gel sheets, comprising the steps of: providing a quantity of fibrous batting material; introducing a quantity for an impermeable material to separate the quanttiy of fibrous batting material and rolling into a fiber-roll preform having a plurality of fibrous layers; infusing a quantity of catalyzed sol into the fiber-roll preform; and gelling the catalyzed sol in the fiber-roll preform to form a gel sheet roll. Such gel sheets are used in manufacturing aerogel blankets used in a variety of applications including thermal and acoustic insulation.
