The present invention relates to epitopes of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the use thereof. The epitopes provided by the present invention are highly preserved, and located in the domain closely related to binding with an epidermal growth factor (EGF). Therefore, vaccine compositions comprising the epitopes or compositions comprising antibodies to the epitopes may efficiently block a signal transduction caused by binding of EGF and EGRF, and thus can be highly valuably used in treating various diseases such as cancer. An antibody bound to the epitopes of the present invention may efficiently inhibit binding of various EGFR ligands such as not only EGF but also TGF-a, AR, BTC, EPR and HB-EGF, with EGFR, and therefore can be used in treating various diseases resulting from an activation of EGFR caused by binding not only with EGF but also with other EGFR ligands.

Disclosed are novel peptides inhibitory of the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and their use in the treatment of angiogenesis-related diseases, including cancer. A combinatorial library of peptides consisting of six amino acid residues were chemically synthesized and, from the library, specific amino acid residues for each amino acid position were screened by comparing their inhibitory activity against VEGF binding to the cell surface receptor. The novel peptide sequences thus obtained bind to VEGF and block the binding of VEGF to its receptors present on the surface of vascular endothelial cells, thereby inhibiting the hormonal activity of VEGF. The peptides inhibit the angiogenesis induced by VEGF and human cancer cells. Also, the peptides inhibit growth and metastasis of human cancer cells transplanted to mice. Thus, the peptides can be used to treat angiogenesis-related diseases, including cancer, diabetic retinopathy, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

The present invention relates to humanized antibodies specific for HBV surface antigen pre-S1, which show binding affinity similar to mouse monoclonal antibody and which show remarkably reduced immunogenicity since they have less mouse-derived amino acid residues. Thus, the humanized antibodies of the present invention may be useful for the prevention of HBV infection and for the treatment of hepatitis B.
