A color separation device useful in information display systems is assembled from three prisms in an arrangement that provides for air equivalent thickness adjustment for each color. The air equivalent thickness adjustment provides for the correction of deviations in any of the three prisms, as well as providing a method to correct for the chromatic aberration arising from other optical elements in the information display system. The color separation device improves image quality and provides opportunities to lower the display system cost by using low tolerance components and/or plastic optical components normally having a high chromatic aberration.

The wavelength-selective optical filter (30) is a conventional fixed wavelength optical interference filter having an angle shift property wherein the wavelength-selectivity changes with changing angles of incidence upon the filter. Because such filters are transparent to a different center wavelength and depending on the angle of incidence of a light beam, multiplexing/demultiplexing is achieved by varying the angle of incidence of a light beam (40) upon a single, constant and non-variable optical interference filter. Two such exemplary systems utilize a multiple reflection chamber adapted to transmit a light beam at successively varied angles of incidence upon a single interference filter.

The present invention relates to electrically-conductive, absorbing, contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings having excellent optical properties characterized by, specifically, a large bandwidth ratio, i.e., a ratio indicative of the range of wavelengths for which the reflectance value is less than 0.6%, and a small brightness value for the visible wavelengths. It has been surprisingly discovered that a simple, two-layer substrate coating consisting of only a first thin layer of a transparent material having a low refractive index and a second very thin layer of an absorbing, electrically conductive, transition metal oxynitride material provides high performance, electrically conductive, contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings having small brightness values and large bandwidth ratios. The present invention provides antireflection coatings having brightness values less than or equal to about 0.22, and preferably less than or equal to about 0.15. One important advantage of the present invention is that, due to the simplicity of the design and the suitability and efficiency of deposition of the materials in an in-line DC reactive magnetron sputtering process, the high performance, absorbing, electrically conductive, and contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings in accord with the present invention can be produced in a very cost-effective manner.

The disclosure relates to a signaling mirror comprising a housing (12) having an opening; mirror means (14) enclosing the housing and having at least a region (18) thereof adapted for transmitting radiation of wavelength within a selected region of the visible spectrum; and illumination means (20-30) within the housing for selectively shining radiation of the selected wavelength on the mirror means. The mirror means comprises a transparent substrate having a thin film coating interference stack (16) forming; (a) a long wave pass thin film filter having a response region for transmitting radiation of wavelength within said selected region of the visible spectrum; and (b) selective absorbing means dispersed throughout the filter for decreasing reflectance and transmittance on the short wavelength side of the spectral response region. Thus the mirror means has visual and ultraviolet opacity, with high transmittance of red radiation, and has neutral reflectance substantially independent of viewing angle. Iron oxide and silicon are the preferred materials for the high index layers.

The optical properties (absorption, reflection, transmittance, transparency) and physical attributes (hardness, friction, durability, etc.) of metal oxides, nitrides, or films that combine these materials can be modified by adding fluorine to the deposition mixture. The extent of change in properties depends on the amount of fluorine incorporated. Contrary to previous information, the presence of fluorine does not prevent adhesion of overlayers such as hard carbon, hydrogenated carbon, or diamond-like carbon. Considering for example massive silicon oxynitride hardcoat layers (94) which are part of wear resistant composite windows for visible spectral applications, preferably fluorine is incorporated in a relatively very thin surface-adjacent region or layer (94) of the hardcoat on the side thereof on which a carbonaceous layer such as DLC is formed. As a result, the index of refraction of the very thin surface region is reduced, the surface region can be used as an effective interference layer, absorption is reduced, reflectance is reduced, transmittance and transparency are improved, and durability is maintained. These fluorine-modified films can be used in many optical designs, including windows (92) or wear resistant coating for laser scanner windows and ophthalmic applications.
