A method of processing material for use in production of rock wool, comprises providing the material in finely divided form; mixing the finely divided material with a fibrous binding agent; and forming the mixture into solid blocks. The resulting blocks (lacking fines) are in a form suitable for use in the production of rock wool, and may be fed to a smelting furnace, together with other ingredients as appropriate, for processing in conventional manner. In one preferred embodiment, the material is waste rock wool, such as spent hydroponic growth medium or shot. By use of the invention, shot which has hitherto constituted a waste material can be recycled and reused in the production of rock wool, thus obviating the waste disposal problem and improving the overall efficiency of the rock wool production process. The invention also covers the resulting solid blocks and a method of producing rock wool using the blocks.

The device is designed for nebulizing liquids and for transporting the formed aerosols. It includes components to form a fountain of liquid that is being nebulized, a container holder (4), a container (2) with contact medium (3), an additional container (5) with liquid being nebulized (6), a nebulization chamber (7), a system for transporting the aerosol to the user, an outlet duct (11), and a mechanism for regulation of rate of delivery of aerosol. The nebulization chamber (7) is designed as a double-element structure, composed of an intake tube (8) and an expansion chamber (9). In the bottom of the expansion chamber (9) outlets (10) have been made for the drainage of the non-nebulized liquid back to the section of the container remote from the base of the fountain. This reduces the negative action of the non-nebulized liquid on the effectiveness of nebulization. The expansion chamber (9) which is incorporated into the nebulization chamber (7) ensures a significant reduction in coagulation of the aerosol particles, thus increasing the efficiency of the nebulizer and particle uniformity. The latter effect is likewise heightened by this specifically designed outlet duct (10) which accomplishes a process of gravitational filtration. As a consequence of the movement of the stream in the narrow intake tube (8) there is formation of a differential pressure, enabling transport of the aerosol from the nebulization chamber to the user. The above principles are proposed for application to multi-use and single-used devices.

The invention provides an electrochemical reaction wherein a controlled amount of a first reagent is generated electrochemically at an electrode in electrical contact with a solution of an electrochemically inert salt, comprising applying a suitable electrical potential to the electrode for a suitable time to generate a controlled amount of the first reagent by electrochemical reaction between the electrode and a species in solution producing a localised thin layer environment comprising the first reagent in the vicinity of the electrode; and monitoring the amount or presence of the first reagent or a further species produced in solution in response to production of the first reagent. The method invention thus involves generating the first reagent in situ at an electrode. Diffusion of the reagent in solution surrounding the electrode will result in creation of a localised environment of the reagent in the vicinity of the electrode, with the amount of reagent depending on the generating current and the length of time for which it is applied, and so being readily and easily controllable.

A new re-transfer intermediate sheet comprising a supporting substrate having on one side an imageable layer and on the other a backcoat, is provided for thermal transfer printing of an article having a dye-receptive surface, by thermal retransfer. This method of printing comprises the steps of pressing together a dye-donor sheet and the imageable layer of the retransfer intermediate sheet, forming an image in the imageable layer by thermal transfer printing, pressing the thus-formed image-containing layer against the dye-receptive surface of the article, and applying heat to the intermediate sheet to effect retransfer of the image to the dye-receptive layer of the article. To improve protection against the physical conditions experienced in such retransfer process, the backcoat of the new intermediate sheet comprises a polymeric binder and a high loading of protective filler, preferably in amount of 100 % to about 250 % by weight of the binder.
