A storage system includes a plurality of rails or tracks arranged in a grid pattern above the stacks of containers. The grid pattern includes a plurality of grid spaces and each stack is located within a footprint of only a single grid space. A load handling device is configured to move laterally on the rails or tracks above the stacks. The load handling device includes a container receiving space located above the rails or tracks in use and a lifting device arranged to lift a container from a stack into the container receiving space. The load handling device includes a mechanism for enabling lateral movement of the device in one of two transverse directions by enabling either a first or second set of wheels to selectively engage the first or second set of rails or tracks.

A sequencing system for a robotic storage and picking system. The storage system comprises a plurality of containers disposed in stacks 10 beneath a grid 22, the grid comprising a first set of tracks or rails and second set of tracks, the first and second sets of tracks being disposed substantially perpendicular to each other. The storage system 1 comprises a plurality of load handling devices operable on the grid, the load handling devices 30 lifting and depositing containers from and to the stacks. A portion of the grid 22 extends over a series of conveyor belts 142. The load handling devices being capable of depositing containers on to the conveyor belts into predetermined positions, the positions being fillable in any random order and multiple positions being fillable at any one time. Additional conveyors 144, 146 may extend substantially perpendicularly to the storage system 1 to transfer the containers from the conveyance means to a vehicle loading area. The conveyor belts may be independently movable such that all positions on each belt may be accessed and filled whilst the belt is stationary.

There is disclosed a method of operating a plurality of fulfilment centres including a large fulfilment centre and a small fulfilment centre, each of the fulfilment centres configured to fulfil customer orders. A first product and a second product are received at the large fulfilment centre. Desired quantities of the first and second products are picked at the large fulfilment centre for packing into a container, wherein the desired quantities include at least one of: quantities ordered by at least one customer, to be fulfilled at the large fulfilment centre or the small fulfilment centre, and quantities predicted to be ordered by at least one customer and to be fulfilled at the small fulfilment centre. A complementary system is also disclosed.
