A fan cooling system and method are provided to control fan speed for cooling vehicle motor components while minimizing power consumption by the fan (52) and reducing engine fuel consumption for an engine partially powering the fan(52). The fan cooling system raises engine coolant temperature of a vehicle in motion to derive a fan speed demand so that fan speed may be reduced. The fan cooling system selects a maximum fan speed demand from one or more fan speed demands to command fan speed based on various sensed inputs, including engine coolant temperatures. The fan cooling system also improves cooling efficiency by incorporating slipheat protection for the fan (52) so as not to overdrive the fan for cooling.

A PTO transmission system in a vehicle for transmitting power to a PTO shaft driving an implement comprises a planetary drive unit having first and second input and output coupled to the PTO shaft. The first and second input are coupled to an output shaft of the vehicle engine and to an output shaft of a drive motor, respectively. A control system controls the transfer of power from a power source to the drive motor. The power source is a variable power generating source driven by the PTO shaft. The drive motor is configured and adapted to decrease or increase the rotational speed of the output of the planetary drive unit on an increase or decrease of the power transferred to it, respectively.

A flat plate nose frame design for a tractor (5) in which a thick, flat structural plate (32) is connected to and forwardly extends from the conventional frame rails (21) of the tractor (5). The flat plate nose frame design increases vertical clearance under the hood without raising the hood height or reducing ground clearance. The nose plate (32) is contoured to match the exterior contours of the tractor grill (15) and hood (11) eliminating the need for a separate aesthetic component covering the nose plate. The nose plate (32) features a pair of vertically aligned short-height frame plates (26, 27) extending forwardly along the axis from the deep-section frame rails (21) to increase strength in the flat nose plate (32) without significantly increasing vertical height of the nose plate assembly. The flat plate nose frame is capable of withstanding operational loads as well as supporting a weight package or front-mounted implements. Additionally, a releasable connector (70) for a tow cable (90) common on large tractors may also be connected to and supported by the flat plate nose frame without adverse impact to its primary advantages.
