A system for treating water and using the treated water for the cooling of industrial processes is disclosed. The water is treated and stored in a large container or artificial lagoon (12), has high clarity and high microbiological quality. A system of the invention generally includes a containing means, such as a large container or artificial lagoon (12), provided with a feeding line (11) for inlet water, a coordination means (10), a chemical application means (18), a mobile suction means (22), a propelling means for moving the mobile suction means (23), a filtration means (20) for filtering the cooling water containing settled particles, a collecting line (19) between the mobile suction and the filtration means, a return line (21) to return filtered water from the filtration means to the containing means (12), an inlet line (1) from the containing means to the industrial process (9) and a return water line (2) from the industrial process (9) to the containing means (12). The coordination means (10) monitors and controls the processes in order to adjust water quality parameters within specified limits. The large container or artificial lagoon (12) can act as a heat sink, absorbing waste heat from the industrial process (9), thus creating thermal energy reservoirs in a sustainable manner, which can be later used for other purposes. The system can be used in any industrial cooling system with any type of water available, including fresh water, brackish water, and seawater.

A low cost system for treating water, which will be used in an industrial process, is provided. A system of the invention generally includes at least one containing means (8), at least one coordination means (1), at least one chemical application means (4), at least one mobile suction means (5), and at least one filtration means (3). The coordination means (1) can control the necessary processes depending on the system needs (e.g., water quality or purity). The system of the invention purifies the water and eliminates suspended solids without the need of filtering the totality of the water volume, but only filtering a small fraction of up to 200 times less than the flow filtered by a conventional water treatment filtration system.

The system of the invention allows activating a chemical application system, mobile suctioning device, and/or degreasing system based on information regarding turbidity, the color of the bottom of the water body, and amount of greases on the surface water layer of the water body, to adjust the water quality parameters within their limits.
