The present invention relates to methods of producing aluminium-containing coagulants based on ultra-high-basicity polyaluminium chlorides (PAC), with Al2O3 content of more than 15.0% (wt. %), relative basicity within 70.0÷75.0% and long shelf life of at least 18 months. The production method can create a wide range of concentrations of an aqueous solution of polyaluminium chloride and is particularly useful for obtaining high concentrations of this substance. Compared to conventional coagulant production processes, the processes described herein are unique since they do not require the use of aluminium metal as a starting material. The products of the process are suitable for use in the technology of drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment for various branches of industrial production.

The process includes (a) supplying wastewater containing aluminium as a feed, (b) separating the wastewater into a liquid component and a sludge component containing the aluminium, (c) reacting the sludge component with sulfuric acid to produce aluminium sulfate, (d) mixing the aluminium sulfate with alcohol to produce aluminium sulfate hydrate, and (e) adding the aluminium sulfate hydrate produced in step (d) to the wastewater of step (a). The process can cost-effectively remove waste from wastewater and reduce the content of waste contained in the effluent to be discharged to nature.

In particular, the process relates to the treatment of produced water with a combination of reagents to clarify the water, the reagents being selected from (i) a dithiocarbamate polymer which is water-soluble and has a molecular weight of 00 or more and (ii) a metal ion selected from the group comprising a cation of a transition metal, aluminium and lead, and an apparatus therefor. The removal of oxoanions from an aqueous stream having a concentration of a metal cation and a concentration of an oxoanion that varies over time may involve continuously monitoring the concentration of the metal cation and the concentration of the oxoanion to provide a current metal cation concentration and a current oxoanion concentration. A metal cation source and an aluminum reagent may be added to the aqueous stream based on the measured current metal cation concentration and the current oxoanion concentration. The amount of the metal cation source and the aluminum reagent added to the stream may be effective to reduce the concentration of the oxoanion in the aqueous stream below a target threshold.
