We describe a method of determining a food-to-biomass ratio in an aqueous fluid the method comprising: providing an aqueous fluid comprising viable biomass and food for said biomass, and wherein there is insufficient available food to sustain all said viable biomass; using a sensor (for example a respirometer or a sensor for sensing an amount of ammonia, ammonium, nitrates or nitrites) to determine an amount of food in said aqueous fluid available to said biomass; determining a measure of viable biomass in said aqueous fluid by measuring polarisability of viable biomass cells in an AC electric field; and determining a food-to-biomass ratio from said amount of food and said measure of viable biomass.

A method and an apparatus for biological wastewater treatment that includes a biological selector and a physical selector. The apparatus comprises an internal biological reactor where wastewater and recycled biomass are combined to provide a high substrate and high electron acceptor gradient for generating morphological biomass features that favor granule formation over floc and filament formation, and an external gravimetric or external screen selector operating on the biomass waste stream for collecting and retaining densified biomass aggregates including dense granule selection and for wasting lighter filaments and flocs. In the method and apparatus, particles may be added to provide cores to promote the formation of aggregates encapsulating the seeded particles. The particles may be added as various materials, for example, in the bioreactor, to initiate or seed the formation of a granule, that could then be separated by or integrated with either the external gravimetric or external screen selector. Further, organisms may be selected for biological phosphorus removal, denitrifying methane oxidizers, biological sulfur or sulfide oxidation, methanogenesis.

The invention relates to a method for treating agricultural liquid manure, in that the liquid manure is treated with precipitant in a settling and/or separation method and is separated into a thick phase and a thin phase or clear phase, according to the preamble of claim 1. In order thereby to increase markedly the separation of thick phase and thin phase or clear phase in pre-separated and non pre-separated liquid manure and permit in the result a year-round discharge of the thin phase of the liquid manure and utilization of the thick phase, according to the invention it is proposed that in addition water is used as separation medium, in such a manner that the suspended matter precipitating out in the reaction of the precipitant with the liquid manure floats on the separation medium water and/or falls in the separation medium water, and a thick phase thus separated from a clear phase can be separated off in a zone-type manner.
