    摘要: A laser based, noncontacting measurement instrument particularly adapted for the printed circuit board drilling industry is disclosed. The instrument accurately measures drill diameter, runout, and tip position under actual operating conditions. A laser beam is focused in space and the amount of light occluded by the drill bit as the bit is passed through the beam is sensed by a detector. Diameter, runout, and tip position are calculated by measuring the amount of occlusion, monitoring the angular orientation of the rotating drill; and correlating the amount of light occlusion to the angular orientation of the drill. The instrument automatically compensates for dust and debris in the optical path.

    摘要: An apparatus and method are disclosed for efficiently lubricating printed circuit boards (16) which are being machined. A vacuum system (50) and a lubrication system (70) are employed on a drilling machine (10) having a spindle assembly (12) and an independently-movable pressure foot (26) wherein the vacuum system (50) and lubrication system (70) are each in fluid communication with a working area (42) defined by the interior of the pressure foot (26). A method for using the vacuum system (50) and the lubrication system (70) includes directing the pressure foot (26) against the workpieces (16) to create a fluid seal, creating a vacuum within the interior of the pressure foot (26), supplying lubricant (78) to the hole being drilled so that lubricant (78) accumulates only within the working area (42) and, finally, releasing the pressure foot (26) from engagement with the workpieces (16) to permit a flow of air into the interior of the pressure foot (26) thereby permitting used lubricant (90) and chips (92) to be evacuated through an exhaust conduit (54) and into a waste receptacle (56).

    摘要: The present invention includes a method of precisely calibrating the position of a spindle (20) of a drilling apparatus (10) with respect to a worktable (14). The drilling apparatus (10) includes the control device (22), which calculates an expected relative position of the spindle (20) and the worktable (14) based upon predetermined information regarding the relative position of the spindle (20) and the worktable (14) and the controlled movement of the spindle (20) relative the worktable (14). The method includes positioning the spindle (20) in a first position with respect to the worktable (14), empirically determining the position of the first position with respect to the worktable (14) in a first direction, empirically determining the position of the first position with respect to the worktable (14) in a second direction, and comparing the expected relative position of the spindle (20) and the worktable (14) at the first position with the empirically determined relative position of the spindle (20) relative the worktable (14) in the first direction and the second direction so as to ascertain the "proper correction factor."
    Another aspect of the invention is a calibration device (54), including a body (66) defining an aperture and (56) an opening spaced from the aperture (56), a first differential pressure transducer (62) measuring the position of an object in the aperture (56) in a first direction, a second differential pressure transducer (64) measuring the position of an object in the aperture (56) in a second direction different from the first direction, and a third differential pressure transducer measuring the direction of an object in the opening in the first direction. Advantageously, the device (54) includes means for securing the device to a worktable (14) to prevent movement of the device in the first direction and the second direction. Preferably, this securing means comprises releasable vacuum cups (130).
