The method described enables the relative displacement of two bodies (1, 2) to be determined upon the basis of the rotation undergone as a result of the displacement by a straight line (R) which joins them. More specifically, the method of the invention provides for the determination of the angle of rotation (α) by measuring the change in the orientation (θ) of a reflecting surface (6) situated on one of the bodies, which is brought about in order to reflect the light radiation emitted by a source (5) placed on the other body onto a fixed element (7). The invention also includes an apparatus for implementing the method, in which the fixed element (7) is constituted by a photodiode with at least two sensitive elements connected for feedback to a control unit; the latter brings about the change in the orientation of the surface (6) after the emission of an electrical signal generated by the different distribution of the light radiation on the sensitive elements.

The disclosure relates to an apparatus for detecting surface defects particularly in rolled strips (N), the operation of the apparatus being based on the use of a telecamera (20) with multiple sensitive elements which form parts of respective bright-field and dark-field recording channels (C1 and C2). More precisely, the above-mentioned elements are sensitive to light radiations within respective ranges of wavelengths corresponding to those of the radiations emitted by the light sources (15 and 16). The latter are arranged in a manner such that, in one case, the radiation emitted thereby falls substantially tangential on the surface of the strip (N) to be checked and, in the other case, such that the radiation reflected by the said surface is directed towards the telecamera. From a comparison of the images recorded by the recording channels (C1,C2), the comparison being effected by electronic means provided in the apparatus, it is possible to derive full information on the state of the surface under examination and hence to apply any necessary modifications to the production cycle.

Furthermore, an apparatus (1) for performing the above method comprises a gasification and slagging reactor (2) in which the gasification and slagging phase occurs, a burner (18) for producing the hot burnt gases, and an exchanger (23), supplied with air by a suitable compressor (25), for heating the air to be used in the gasification and slagging and combustion phases.
