Detection circuitry is described in which the range and signal to noise ratios are improved. The circuitry includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (12, 14, 16, 18) connected in series and a plurality of photodiodes (22, 24, 26, 28). Each photodiode (22) has its own separate detection circuit (42, 62) which is AC decoupled by capacitors (52). Summing means (70) are connected to sum the outputs of the detection circuits and the resultant signal is fed to an output device (10). The magnitude of the output signal is increased by a factor equal to the product of the number of light emitting diodes (12, 14, 16, 18) and the number of photodiodes (22, 24, 26, 28), over the situation where only one diode of each type is used.

Lesdits capteurs (24, 26) sont destinés à détecter la présence de toute forme irrégulière en déplacement (par exemple une forme humaine) dans le passage de la porte, afin d'inverser l'action d'ouverture de la porte ou, si celle-ci est déjà ouverte, d'empêcher la fermeture de la porte. Un circuit de compensation de signaux est destiné à traiter les signaux de sortie provenant des capteurs de manière à égaliser les sorties en permanence, dans des conditions stables. Cette opération est effectuée en utilisant la sortie d'un premier capteur (26) comme signal de quasi-référence. Un comparateur (113) compare la sortie d'un second capteur (24) avec un signal de quasi-référence et modifie, à travers une boucle de réaction (139), la sortie du second capteur (24) de manière à égaliser la sortie du premier capteur (26). A detection system for a sliding lift or elevator door comprises at least two sensors (24,26) for monitoring the door opening. The sensors (24,26) are arranged to detect the presence of moving irregular shape (e.g. the human form) in the doorway to reverse the opening action of the door or, if already open, to prevent the door from closing. A signal compensation circuit is provided to process the output signals from the sensors in a sense to maintain the outputs equal under steady state conditions. This is achieved by using the output of a first sensor (26) as a quasi reference signal. A comparator (113) compares the output of a second sensor (24) with a quasi reference signal and through a feedback loop (139) modifies the output of the said second sensor (24). The feedback loop (139) contains a delay circuit (117,122,123,126) which is switchable between a long and short delay. For slow changes in the output of the second sensor (24) the long delay is effective but for fast changes the delay circuit (117,122,123,126) is switched to provide a short delay. The compensation circuit is effectively desensitised against errors due to drift and other slow varying influences.

Another two transmitter/receiver pairs (26 and 28) are mounted on the leading edge or surface of the door (12) to transmit energy pulses at right angles to the surface or edge of the door (12). One of the latter two receiver pairs (26) has a different response to the other pair (27) so that when the door (12) approaches a stationary object the one pair (26) detects the object ahead of the other pair (27). Means are provided to respond to the output of the one pair (26) indicating the detection of an object to inhibit the output of the other pair (27). Different transmitter/receiver pairs may transmit on different frequencies, and means for suppressing unwanted reflected signals is provided. Means for transmitting data signals on a two conductor power supply cable for the system is also disclosed.

In elevators or lifts, sensing systems are mounted on two doors which move towards and away from sone another to detect obstructions in the opening between them. This ensures the safety of persons using the lifts. The two systems are electrically linked to receive a power supply and to effect data transfer between them. Because the doors are continually in motion the conductors concerned are subject to continual flexure. The more conductors there are, the higher the risk of damage to at least one of them. The present invention relates to a two conductor transmission system for transmitting power and data between two stations. The system comprises first station linked to a second station by only first and second conductors (75A,75B). The first station includes a DC source (72) for supplying the first and second conductors (75A,75B) with DC power, a synchronisation pulse generator (69), a first modulator for modulating the DC power fed to the conductors with the synchronisation pulses, a data terminal connected to said first conductor for receiving data transmitted from the second station, and first inhibiting means (70) responsive to the synchronisation pulses to inhibit the passage of data to the data terminal during the transmission of synchronisation pulses. The second station comprises data signal generating means connected to the first and second conductors (75A,75B) to receive DC power and synchronisation signals therefrom, the data signal generating means being arranged to generate data signals indicative of a monitored condition, a second modulator for modulating the DC power flowing along the first conductor (75A) in response to the generated data signals, and second inhibiting means responsive to the data signals generated to render the data signal generating means insensitive to the data signals appearing on the first conductor (75A).
