Es ist bekannt ein oder mehrere Dicarbonsäurederivate der allgemeinen Formel I mit ein oder mehreren aromatischen Diaminen der allgemeinen Formel II und gegebenenfalls m-Phenylendiamin in aprotischen polaren Lösungsmitteln zu polykondensieren. Dadurch, daß man in die nach der Beendigung der Polykondensation erhaltene Polymerlösung eine zur Neutralisation des gebildeten HCl ausreichende Menge Ammoniak einleitet und entstehendes Ammoniumchlorid abfiltriert, gelingt es neutrale, salzfreie und besonders lagerstabile Polyetheramidlösungen herzustellen, die ohne Isolierung des Polymers zu Membranen weiterverarbeitbar sind. Resultierende Membranen sind dampfsterilisierbar, chemisch und thermisch stabil und zeigen Leistungsdaten im Bereich guter Highflux-Dialysemembranen. Flach- und Hohlfasermembranen für die Ultrafiltration.

An apparatus is described for effecting mass and/or heat transfer, including a cylindrical open-ended housing (1) closed by two end caps (4) , each provided with an inlet (5) or an outlet (6) for a first fluid intended to flow through a bundle of hollow fibers (2) arranged within the housing (1) between two end walls (3) , at least one of said end caps being provided with an outlet (8) for a second fluid intended to be removed from the space outside the fibers (2), the inlets and/or outlets (5-8) provided in one and the same end cap being separated by the adjacent end wall (3). The apparatus described is characterized by a ring (15) arranged in the housing (1) and/or the end cap in such a way that a channel or channels (17) is/are provided, connecting said outlet (8) for the second fluid with the space outside the fibers (2). Preferably the apparatus according to the invention is intended for hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration or hemodialysis. It may, however, also be used for dialysis in general or filtration in general and for heat transfer or as an oxygenator.

Filtration membrane, especially adapted for use in hemofiltration as well as filtration of infusion solutions. The membrane, preferably in the form of a hollow fiber, is made of a polymer which is soluble in a polar, non-protonic organic solvent. The most preferred polymer for the membrane material is polyamide. Characterizing for the membrane is high ultrafiltration rates (permeabilities to water) of up to 500 x 10- 4 ml/sec. x cm2 x atm., and impermeability to albumin (M w 68,000). The membrane is prepared by extruding a polymer solution with a center liquid under conditions such that the volume of polymer solution to volume of center liquid ratio is within the range of from 2 : 1 to 4 : 1. Simultaneously, the inner diameter to wall thickness ratio of the hollow fiber is preferably correlated to the polymer concentration and is set to 150:75 to 280:75 at a polymer concentration of 5-20%. The most preferred such correlation is 220 : 75 at a polymer concentration of 11 %.

This invention describes blood treating material having the capacity to selectively remove endotoxin and cytokine inducing substances from blood or plasma by extracorporeal adsorption for therapeutic septic shock treatment. The endotoxin adsorption ligands of the invention are oligopeptides synthesized from amino acids having a pk > 7.2 such as arginine, lysine or histidine, using a polycondensation step such that the resultant oligopeptides exhibit a high degree of polydispersity. Also provided are methods and devices using an adsorbent having a polydisperse oligopeptide of the invention immobilized on a solid state support medium for removing endotoxin from the blood of human or animal subject.
