The present invention provides a bile acid absorbent/adsorbent comprising as active ingredients a lactic acid bacterium having a property of incorporating bile acids into the cell in the presence of an oligosaccharide and of no releasing them out of the cells, and the oligosaccharide. The lactic acid bacterium includes Lactobacillus salivarius ssp. salicinius strain JCM1044, Bifidobacterium breve strain JCM1192, etc. The oligosaccharide includes raffinose, kestose, nystose, trehalose, etc. The bile acid adsorbent is in a form of oral formulation, or eatables and drinkables, etc. The bile acid absorbent/adsorbent can be utilized as cholesterol lowering agents or colorectal cancer inhibitors.

A method of diagnosing cancer characterized by comprising measuring the activity of DNA-dependent protein kinase in cells originating in a subject. According to this cancer diagnosis method, the occurrence of cancer cells can be examined regardless of organs or factors causative of cancer. A method of judging cancer risk characterized by comprising measuring the activity of DNA-dependent protein kinase in cells originating in a subject.

It is intended to provide a vaccine strain scarcely undergoing atavism (reversion) to thereby provide a smallpox vaccine having an elevated safety. Namely, a vaccine virus lacking the whole or a part of B5R gene of a vaccinia virus strain LC16m8 or LC16m0 produces no B5R gene product having the normal function. This vaccine virus is usable as a smallpox vaccine and as a vector capable of expressing a foreign gene. Thus, a smallpox virus and a vaccinia virus vector producing no B5R gene product having the normal function by reverse mutation are provided.

The present invention provides a process for preparing a transplantable liver tissue, cell colonies suitable for the process and a process for preparing them. At least about 70 % of the cells in the cell small hepatocyte-rich colonies of the present invention are small hepatocytes. In particular, each colony comprises about 10 to 30 cells and the number of the small hepatocytes is at least about 70 % based on the total number of the cells in the colony. A process for preparing such small hepatocyte-rich colonies is also disclosed. The present invention also discloses a process for inducing the maturation of the cell small hepatocyte-rich colonies into a liver tissue and a method of estimating the effect of a drug, particularly the effect thereof connected with normal liver function, in vitro using the cell colonies enriched with the small hepatocytes which has been induced to be matured.

A device for promoting subject person’s awareness of a change of his/her posture, the awareness promoted by skin sensory stimulation produced based on posture change information (amount, direction, etc. of a positional change of subject person’s gravity center) from an apparatus for detecting a posture change of the subject person. The device has stimulation-producing means (vibrators) for producing skin sensory stimulation and stimulation-controlling means for driving the stimulation-producing means based on the posture change information. The control means has means for selecting vibrators, based on the direction of a positional change of the gravity center, from the vibrators arranged substantially parallel to the direction of a positional change of the gravity center, and sequentially drives the selected vibrators, for example, to the direction opposite the direction of a positional change of the gravity center. Further, the control means drives the vibrators so as to produce sensory stimulation with strength corresponding to the amount of a directional change of the gravity center. The vibrators are installed on a foot bottom, waist, breast, etc. The device can accurately inform the subject person of a change of his/her posture to promote his/her action to maintain the posture.

A hydrogel of the semi-interpenetrating network structure or interpenetrating network structure, characterized in that the hydrogel is one formed from a first monomer ingredient at least 10 mol% of which is accounted for by a charge-possessing unsaturated monomer and a second monomer ingredient at least 60 mol% of which is accounted for an electrically neutral, unsaturated monomer, the molar ratio of the first monomer ingredient to the second monomer ingredient being from 1/2 to 1/100, and that the second monomer ingredient has been polymerized and crosslinked to a lower degree of crosslinking than the first monomer ingredient The hydrogel is usable in a diaper, sanitary good, sustained-release agent, construction material, building material, communication material, soil conditioner, contact lens, ocular lens, hollow fiber, artificial cartilage, artificial organ, material for fuel cells, battery diaphragm, impact-resistant material, cushion, etc.
