The present invention addresses the problem of providing a novel crystal of 2,2'-bis(carboxymethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl suitable as a resin raw material having excellent optical characteristics. As a solution, it was found that by carrying out crystallization using a particular solvent, a crystal of 2,2'-bis(carboxymethoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl is obtained that is represented by a chemical formula, that has an endothermic peak top temperature, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, falling within a specific range, and that has an aerated bulk density falling within a specific range.

A method for producing high purity 1,1-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane (BPTMC), which comprises reacting phenol and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanone in the presence of an acid catalyst in a slurry containing crystals of a phenol adduct of BPTMC, neutralizing the resulting slurry reaction mixture with an alkaline solution while warming, cooling the solution, filtering the resultant BPTMC-phenol adduct crystals, dissolving the adduct crystals in the solvent for crystallization by warming, cooling the resultant solution followed by filtration of the formed BPTMC crystals, and recycling at least a part of the filtrate to the above reaction step. The method can be employed for producing, with high selectivity and in high yield, a BPTMC which contains residual phenol and impurities (sodium, chlorine, sulfur) in extremely small amounts, has high purity, is free from discoloration and thus can be suitably used as a law material for optical articles.
