摘要: An applicator (10, 10a) has a ratchet mechanism for dispensing material from a single or multiple barrel container (58). The ratchet mechanism includes a clutch (28, 34) that substantially prevents movement of a plunger (18, 18a) of the applicator (10, 10a) whenever a resistance to plunger movement is greater than a certain value. As a consequence, bursting of the container (58), or damage to components of the applicator (10, 10a), is substantially avoided.

摘要: A fluorescent spectrophotometer (100) measures the fluorescent characteristics of fluorescent probes within functional compositions of a specimen. The fluorescent spectrophotometer (100) emits light appropriate for exciting the fluorescer or fluorescers contained within the specimen. The excited fluorescer emits within an emission wavelength spectrum. Fluorescers having a narrower wavelength region over which an abrupt change in emission intensity occurs are chosen for use as a fluorescent probe. The fluorescent spectrophotometer (100) detects the change in intensity through this narrower area and performs a derivative calculation on the intensity curve. The fluorescent spectrophotometer (100) is able to distinguish the fluorescer from other fluorescers or interfering fluorescent backgrounds.

摘要: A multilayer polyester film, and a method for making the same, is provided. The film consists of alternating layers of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate. Biaxial orientation and subsequent restrained heat setting of these materials results in thin films with tensile moduli in both stretch directions well in excess of the values obtained with monolithic films of either material. In some embodiments, a slippery surface is imparted to the film without the use of conventional slip agents.

The method includes the steps of: providing a backing having a first major surface; coating the first major surface of the backing with a tie coat precursor, wherein the tie coat precursor comprises a first radiation curable component; applying an abrasive slurry to the first major surface of the backing after coating the tie coat precursor thereon, wherein the abrasive slurry comprises a plurality of abrasive particles and a binder precursor, and further wherein the binder precursor comprises a second radiation curable component; at least partially curing the tie coat precursor; and at least partially curing the binder precursor to form an abrasive article, wherein the abrasive article comprises a backing, an abrasive layer, and a tie coat disposed between the backing and the abrasive layer. Preferably, the method provides a structured abrasive article.

摘要: The guidance system of the invention includes at least two spaced, permanently magnetized regions that each produce a magnetic field. The two permanently magnetized regions can be provided at either side of another region that produces a magnetic field of less intensity than the permanently magnetized regions, and in one embodiment, the former region produces no magnetic field. The system may also include portable means for detecting the magnetic fields produced by the permanently magnetized regions, and that sensor may be mounted to a cane for use by a person. In another embodiment, the permanently magnetized regions contrast with either each other or the region that produces a magnetic field of less intensity, or have different surface characteristics, or both.

摘要: A system that integrates active and simulated decisionmaking processes generates decisions in response to events representing changes in a domain model, and updates the domain model according to the decisions. The system includes a real-time mode for generating recommendations in response to real-time events, and a simulation mode for generating recommendations in response to simulated events. The simulation mode is capable of running on either randomly generated domain events or real-time domain events captured during the real-time mode. In addition, the simulation mode does not require development of a separate domain model for simulation. Rather, the simulation mode may use the contents of a domain model established during the real-time mode. Integration of an active decisionmaking tool with a simulation tool thereby eliminates the cost of constructing a separate simulation model, and avoids invalidation of the contents of the simulation model over time.
