A rearward portion of each corner face (18) remote from the front face (12) is offset inwardly from the foward portion to provide a clearance portion (40). The clearance portion (40) extends from the rear face (14) to a plane generally centrally of the thickness of the plate (11).

There are provided an apparatus and a method for manufacturing a copper-base alloy. The apparatus includes an alloying spout (16), at least one feeder (20 and/or 22) and a tundish (18). The alloying spout (16) is inclined downwardly from one end toward the other end for flowing a molten copper therethrough. The feeder (20 and/or 22) is connected to the alloying spout (16) for introducing at least one solid solute constituent into the alloying spout (16). The method includes the steps of providing the above apparatus, continuously introducing the molten copper from the inlet (16a) into the passageway (16c) of the alloying spout (16) and causing the molten copper to flow downwardly through the passageway (16c) to the outlet (16b) and continuously introducing the solid solute constituent into the passageway (16c) of the alloying spout (16) through the feeder (20 and/or 22) to mix the solute constituent with the molten copper to produce the copper-base alloy.

The mounting member has an upper face and a lower face to which the other face of the slab member is fixedly secured, and is disposed above the surface plate in such a manner that the one face of the slab member to be polished is held in contact with the upper surface of the surface plate. The urging shaft is connected to the mounting member for urging the mounting member toward the surface plate at a prescribed urging pressure to bring the one face of the slab member into pressure contact with the upper surface of the surface plate. The pressure transmitting member is interposed between the mounting member and the urging shaft for causing the urging pressure of the urging shaft to exert on the upper face of the mounting member. The transmitting member has a deformable chamber which contains a fluid (26) therein.

A highly corrosion-resistant amorphous alloy containing 10 to 40 atom % of Ta and also Mo, Cr, W, P, B, Si, etc. is disclosed. This alloy can be produced by super-quenching and solidifying molten metal, and shows a good corrosion resistance in a high-temperature, conc. phosphoric acid, thus being suited to be used as the structural material of a plant where phosphoric acid is used and as the separator for fuel cells.
