A connector module permits termination of cross-connect wires on one surface (front) and cable wires on an opposite surface (rear). The module exhibits a configuration, which permits test access and protector (i.e., protection module) mounting from the front surface. The jumper wires are inserted from a side surface through wire guides or channels that bring the wires from the side surface to the front surface where the wires can be terminated without impeding insertion and removal of protection modules from the front of the connector module. There is an intermediate surface below the front surface that is accessible from the front and recessed to allow protection modules to be installed completely below the terminated wires, allowing termination and maintenance of jumper wires after the protection module is installed from the front.

A thermally activated shunt assembly (18) is thermally coupled to the gas discharge tube (16) and senses when the gas discharge tube (16) is in an overheating condition. Upon such condition, the shunt assembly provides an electrically conductive shunt in parallel with the gas discharge tube (16) to divert current flowing through the gas discharge tube (16) to flow through the shunt assembly (18) to ground in order to minimize further overheating of the gas discharge tube (16).

An improved fiber optic connector of the type in which a fiber supporting ferrule (15) is slidably and resiliently biased independently of the surrounding load-bearing parts of the connector so that forces applied to the fiber optic cable jacket are not transmitted to the ferrule (15) and supported fiber to interrupt communications then in progress. In one of the embodiments, the needle of a syringe is inserted into a positioning tube (16) which confines an adhesive to the needed area, and prevents wicking of the adhesive to surrounding areas where it might interfere with the sliding action of the ferrule (15). It also wipes the needle as the syringe is withdrawn. A rear body element (13) provided with internal threads (50) which surround the cable jacket, which during a crimping operation, causes the jacket to deform into the threads for superior cable retention. Alternate embodiments include a rear body having means for engaging a sheath of a fiber optic cable, key means, and crimping operations with collet-like fingers.

A Test Access Matrix (TAM) system permits installation onto an existing connector block. The TAM system exhibits a configuration that permits installation on to telecommunications circuits at the connection point provided for installation of protection modules (1) or other devices (1) that are inserted into the telecommunication circuit. The installation can be accomplished either before new or after existing connector blocks are installed on a telecommunication cross connect frame, tie frame, or other support structure. The TAM system can be instructed to connect a two or four wire test bust to any of the individual telecommunication circuits that are connected to the connector block. The test bus can be connected to the individual communication circuits in either a bridging, break towards the distribution side of the local loop, break towards the telecommunications equipments, or an insertion into the line via a 'make before break' sequence.

A telecommunications fault location and diagnostic system employs a remote test unit (RTU) (2) to collect system parameter data. The RTU is operatively coupled to a trained neural network (30) which receives the system parameter data from the RTU (2). The neural network (3) is trained using pre-screened historical fault data which is stored in a database. Once trained the neural network classifies the RTU data into one of a predetermined number of fault probabilities.
