An apparatus provides variable resistance to rotation and includes a housing having a shaft having a first portion that is rotatable in the housing and a second portion passing outwardly thereof adapted to receive the tire of a bicycle for stationary bicycle exercise. A first body in the housing is mechanically linked to the first portion of the shaft so as to be rotatable within the housing. A second body in the housing is slidably connected to the first portion of the shaft and has flat face opposed to the flat face of the first body. The second body is movable with respect to the first body to result in a variably-sized gap between the opposed faces. A spring located between the housing and the second body biases the second body toward the first body. Further mechanism is provided to permit adjustment of the gap between the first body and the second body, and a viscous fluid in the housing frictionally engages the bodies and provides resistance to their rotation, with the amount of resistance dependent upon the size of the gap.

An apparatus and method for improving physical coordination and ability to react to moving and stationary objects is disclosed herein. A pair of voltage controlled liquid crystal lenses (14, 16) are mounted in a support frame (12) which is worn by a user in the same manner as conventional eyeglasses. The lenses (14, 16) can be electronically pulsed between an opaque state and a transparent state. Further, the lenses (14, 16) scatter background light in their opaque state rather than block the light so as to provide a generally constant level of contrast and brightness. This prevents pupil dilation changes when switching between the transparent state and the opaque state. Each lens can be made to pulse from an opaque state to a transparent state and then back again, and can be controlled independently or in synchronization. In operation, the user adjusts the control unit (18) to pulse the lenses (14, 16) at a high speed. An object is then viewed through the lenses and an appropriate response is made. As the user's proficiency increases, the user decreases the pulse rate and continues to react to the object. Reduction in pulse rate is continued until the desired level of reaction proficiency is achieved. When the apparatus is eventually removed, the user will be able to react to objects moving at higher speeds with greater proficiency. Additionally, in the case of both moving and stationary objects, the user's ability to concentrate will be increased.

A desk (10) that contains an integrated computer (28). The desk (10) includes a screen (22) and a keyboard (20) that are attached to a frame (12). The desk may also have a backplane (60) located in a slot (26) of the frame (12). A portable transporter computer (28) can be plugged into the backplane (60) to couple the transporter (28) with the screen (22) and keyboard (20). A battery module (32) may also be plugged into the frame (12) to power the transporter (28), screen (22) and keyboard (20). When the desk (10) is not in use the battery module (32) can be plugged into a charging station (110) to recharge the batteries of the module (32).
