Systems and methods for controlling the use and duplication of digital content distributed on removable media are described. In accordance with embodiments of the present invention digital content is protected by allowing a particular number of protected (e.g., encrypted) copies of the digital content to be made (202, 203). Typically, these copies may only be used on and moved between authorized devices (204, 205, 206). In one embodiment, if copies are desired, the maximum number of allowable copies of the protected digital content are made and stored on a computer's hard drive when the storage medium (e.g., a CD) containing the content is inserted into the computer (201, 202, 203). Each copy can then be moved but not copied to other devices (e.g., portable solid state devices) (204, 205, 206). In an alternative embodiment, the storage medium containing the digital content is writable (e.g., a CD-R). When the storage medium is inserted into the computer, the computer writes information to the storage medium which regulates future copying and playing of the digital content on the storage medium (404).

A method of and apparatus for recording information from a master medium onto a slave medium. In one embodiment, digital information on a master medium is reproduced and stored at a first rate, typically at real time, in a first high speed digital storage device such as a magnetic disk drive. The digital information stored in the first storage device, when needed, is transferred at a second rate, much higher than the first, to a second digital storage device in which it is stored until it is scheduled for duplication, at which time the digital information is repeatedly played back at a third rate, much higher than the first rate and slower than the second rate, and is converted from digital information into analog information and applied to a duplicating device for recording the analog information onto a slave medium. Because the information stored in the first digital storage device is not directly used in production, the duplicating device can be duplicating information previously transferred from the first storage device to the second at the same time information is being reproduced from a master medium and loaded, in real time, into the first storage device.

When the user places a touch pen in touch with a touch panel in a position corresponding to a position P1 in a map and drags the touch pen along a locus to a position P2 with the touch pen being kept in touch with the touch panel, PD will judge that a grid is still an option. Thereafter, when the user takes the touch pen off the touch panel surface, the PD will select the grid corresponding to the position P2 where the touch pen has finally been in touch with the touch panel. The PD will output not only content data assigned to the selected grid but a sound corresponding to predetermined content data even while the grid is still an option. The present invention is applicable to a portable recorder/player.

Systems and methods are provided for distributing large files, such as media files (e.g., audio, video, and multimedia files), over a server or other file exchange platform. In some embodiments of the method, an electronic message having a file attached thereto is provided (11) which designates a plurality of recipients. A single copy of the file is uploaded to a first server (21). Then, for each designated recipient, the file is transmitted (23) from the first server to the designated recipient. In other embodiments, the attached file is resident on a remote server (19). The message is then sent to each recipient along with an identifier that uniquely identifies the file. For each recipient, when the message is opened, the file is sent from the first server to the recipient.
