A novel process for preparing chromium dioxide of substantially high purity as well as composites of CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 3 and CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 5 following a sequence of simple steps. The process does not require pressure as a control parameter during the process of synthesis. No chemical modifier has been used to bring down the working pressure during synthesis. Fairly hard sintered pellets of CrO 2 can be obtained without introducing any detectable impurity phase that usually appears during the process of sintering. Further, CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 3 and CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 5 composites have also been prepared where the fraction of insulating Cr 2 O 3 or Cr 2 O 5 in metallic CrO 2 can be easily controlled. Significant negative magnetoresistance is found in pure CrO 2 (5% MR) as well as CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 3 (33% MR) composites near room temperature. The MR studies on the CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 5 composites have been done and significant negative MR (22%) has been found in CrO 2 /Cr 2 O 5 composites near room temperature.

The present disclosure provides a method for synthesizing fibrous silica nanospheres, the method can include, in sequence, the steps of: a) providing a reaction mixture comprising a silica precursor, a hydrolyzing agent, a template molecule, a co-surfactant and one or more solvents; b) maintaining the reaction mixture under stirring for a length of time; c) heating the reaction mixture to a temperature for a length of time; d) cooling the reaction mixture to obtain a solid, and (e) calcinating the solid to produce fibrous silica nanospheres, wherein desirable product characteristics such as particle size, fiber density, surface area, pore volume and pore size can be obtained by controlling one or more parameters of the method. The present disclosure further provides a method for synthesizing fibrous silica nanospheres using conventional heating such as refluxing the reactants in an open reactor, thereby eliminating the need for microwave heating in a closed reactor or the need for any pressure reactors.

This invention relates to a confocal fluorescence correlation microscope with real-time alignment read out. With this instrument it is possible to do confocal imaging together with the particle size determination at a chosen location in the specimen. In particular, this invention relates to a detector module with a fixed aperture and detection electronics that can be conveniently connected to an existing confocal or multiphoton microscope, near the base of the objective lens of the microscope. This detector splits a part of the signal and uses it to generate a spot on the confocal image. This shows the spot where an FCS measurement can be carried out, and the same signal can then be used to perform a fluorescence correlation measurement after parking the excitation beam of the confocal to that spot. No alignment step is necessary for obtaining the measurement.
