A conditionally visible bite line may be demarcated on a shoe upper using one of a fluorescent material and an Infrared (IR) material. Such a conditionally visible bite line may be observable only under particular conditions, such as when illuminated by an ultraviolet light source or an IR light source, as appropriate. A light may be projected to intersect the conditionally visible bite line under conditions rendering the conditionally visible bite line detectable. The intersection(s) of the projected light and the conditionally visible bite line may be used to create a virtual bite line for use in generating a tool path to process the surface of a shoe upper bounded by the conditionally visible bite line.

For digitising a surface portion of a three-dimensional article a light source (14) is provided which projects onto the surface portion to be digitised of an article (S) a narrow band of light which extends over the surface portion. In addition, by effecting relative movement between the article and the light source (14) the narrow light band is caused to traverse progressively over the surface portion from one end thereof to the other. A camera (22) comprising a two-dimensional array of cells (26) monitors the location of the narrow light band at successive localities along its traversed path, the cells of the camera being illuminated according to the incidence thereon of light reflected from the narrow beam, and processor means is provided whereby the location of the narrow light band at selected intervals in its traverse are converted to digitised coordinate axis values, along three axes, said values thus being representative of the contour of the surface portion. The apparatus may be free-standing, serving to digitise the surface of an article, e.g. a shoe bottom, in an individual operation, or alternatively may be incorporated in a machine for effecting a progressive operation, again, e.g. on shoe bottoms. The apparatus may also be used for monitoring edges of components and for determining the configuration of marginal portions of such components, in order to enable the operating path of a tool at or adjacent such edge to be automatically determined, or may be used in a machine for pulling an article over a former e.g. a shoe pulling and lasting machine.

The computer may also be employed to provide stored additional information for modifying that data record to compensate for a perceived defect of the foot (12). In response to the stored data record and any stored additional information for modifying that data record, a shaping unit shapes an insert blank to form a custom-made shoe insert conforming to the undersurface of the foot (12) and compensating for any perceived defect of the foot.

The method comprises: automatically identifying a three-dimensional space within which a first manufacturing part of the plurality of manufacturing parts is positioned and the manufacturing tool operates; automatically identifying a position of a second manufacturing part of the plurality of manufacturing parts; based on the identified position of the first manufacturing part, positioning the manufacturing tool such that the vacuum-powered part holder is proximate to the first manufacturing part of the plurality of manufacturing parts; generating a vacuum force transferred through a bottom surface of the vacuum-powered part holder; temporarily maintaining the first manufacturing part in contact with at least a portion of the vacuum-powered part holder; based on the position of the second manufacturing part, transferring the first manufacturing part to the second manufacturing part of the plurality of manufacturing parts; releasing the first manufacturing part from the vacuum-powered part holder; positioning the manufacturing tool such that the ultrasonic-welding horn is proximate to the first manufacturing part where the first manufacturing part is contacting the second manufacturing part; and applying ultrasonic energy through the ultrasonic-welding horn, wherein the ultrasonic energy is effective for joining the first manufacturing part with the second manufacturing part.

The measuring apparatus may comprise a plurality of probes capable of sensing pressure at various pixels on the underside surfaces of the person's feet at various configurations and determining the heights at the various pixels for the various configurations. The fabricating apparatus may lay down a plurality of discs on a base layer having different hardnesses based on the measured pressure and heights by the measuring apparatus to fabricate customized orthotics. As a further alternative, the fabricating apparatus may form the customized orthotic via milling orthotic blanks based on the measured pressure and heights by the measuring apparatus. The orthotic vending machine may be placed in shoe retail shops such that shoe purchasers may purchase a shoe and a customized orthotic during one visit to the shoe store.
