This invention describes self-reinforced, absorbable materials and devices or their parts or components for surgi cal fixation of damaged and/or operated tissues, which ma terials, devices or their parts or components comprise: (1) matrix of an absorbable polymer or copolymer or of a po lymer mixture, (2) reinforcement elements or structures con structed of them which are at least partially embedded in matrix and which reinforcement elements have the same chemical element percentual composition as matrix and (3) coating layer which covers a substantial part of the surface of the matrix-reinforcement element system and which coat ing layer has the same chemical element percentual compo sition as matrix (1) and reinforcement elements (2) have. The materials of this invention have better mechanical strength properties than the known absorbable materials have. Therefore the materials of this invention can be appli ed widely in surgical treatment to fixation of tissues or parts of them.

This invention describes absorbable and/soluble nonporous or porous polymeric films which have been reinforced with at least partially absorbable and/or soluble oriented structural elements like with oriented molecular chains, crystalline lamellae or filaments or fibers or with structures which have been constructed of fibers. The films of this invention are applied either to join tissues or their parts to each others or to separate them from each others like specially to protect controlled growth of periodontal ligament and/or cementum tissue.

Biocomposite material for bone surgical applications comprises at least one bioceramic piece (1) (bioceramic component) and at least one material component (2) which has been manufactured of at least one polymer or corresponding, which material component (2) has at least one common boundary surface with the bioceramic component. The material component (2) comprises at least reinforcement elements which have been manufactured of essentially resorbable material like polymer, copolymer, polymer mixture and/or ceramic material. The material component (2) can include binding material which is manufactured essentially of resorbable polymer, copolymer or polymer mixture. The material component (2) contains at least in tissue conditions open porosity.

Supporting structure (1) for preventing the movements of powder material (2) which will be applied as bone graft (bone graft powder) which supporting structure (1) will be located to contact with bone tissue and which supporting structure (1) is manufactured of at least partially resorbable polymer, copolymer or polymer mixture and is of its form chute-like, box-like, a flat tube or bag and contains such open porosity, which allows the surrounding tissues to grow through the supporting structure (1) but which prevents the migration of the bone graft powder (2) through the pores outside the supporting structure (1). The part of the supporting structure (1) which will be located against bone surface contains at least one orifice, whose size is bigger than the size of pores of the supporting structure (1) and bigger than the size of the bone graft powder (2) particles, which orifice makes possible the growth of the bone tissue into the inside of the supporting structure (1).

The invention relates to structures and/or devices which are in an intimate tissue contact or are installable at least partly to the inside of tissues and/or organs and/or body cavities (ducts), and which have some function (especially core layer II), such as the supporting and/or joining and/or replacing of tissues and/or organs or parts thereof, and/or the con veying of material and/or energy between various parts of the body and/or between the body and its environment. At least a part of the surfaces of the structures and/or devices in question comprises an organic and/or inorganic surface layer (I) containing antimicrobial or other chemotherapeutic substance or combination of substances being releasable from the sur face layer in tissue conditions and preventing the growth of micro-organisms or corresponding organisms or killing them, thus preventing the propagation of micro-organisms and corresponding organisms, the start of infection, the propagation of infection, or suppressing infection, in the tissues and/or on the surface layer (I) of said structure and/or device.

A method of producing a surgical implant, device, or part thereof, made of biodegradable material for performing at least one function selected from the group consisting of supporting, joining and separating tissue and keeping open a tissue cavity. One biodegradable rod which is wound around a winding center into a helical configuration in a manner that between successive winds there is provided a space free of material of the biodegradable rod, and which is reinforced with biodegradable reinforcement element in a biodegradable matrix the reinforcement elements being oriented substantially in a longitudinal direction of the biodegradable rod.
