摘要: A method is described for analyzing at least one condition present in a droplet actuator (1100). The droplet actuator comprises a bottom substrate (1110) separated from a top substrate (1112) by a gap (1114). The bottom substrate includes an arrangement of droplet operations electrodes (1116). Droplet operations are conducted on droplets (1124) located atop droplet operations electrodes (1116). The gap is filed with an oil filler fluid (1122) and an impedance sensing system (1200) is electrically connected to the droplet actuator (1100). The method comprises correlating impedance measurements obtained using the impedance sensing system with at least one condition present in the droplet actuator. The impedance sensing system may comprise an impedance spectrometer. The method may be used to determine a liquid temperature, e.g., droplet temperature, or the interfacial tension of the oil layer and/or droplets, or heat produced as a byproduct of chemical reactions.

摘要: The invention provides for a method of performing capacitance detection on a droplet actuator. A capacitor may be formed by the combination of a conductive droplet, an insulator layer, and one or more transport electrodes within a droplet actuator. At any given electrode, the capacitance measured is proportional to the footprint area of a droplet thereon. Capacitance detection methods of the invention herein may be used as a real-time verification tool in order to detect the absence, presence, and/or partial presence of a droplet at an electrode; analysis of droplet properties; measurement of droplet size or volume; optimization of the speed of droplet operations; and detection of air bubbles. The method may include applying a base oscillation frequency at the position and detecting a deviation from the base oscillation frequency.
