The present invention relates to a method of infiltrating a preformed, three-dimensional component structure, comprising substantially conformably supporting at least one surface of at least one three-dimensional, preformed component comprised of bonded particulates including providing a barrier of material substantially non-wettable to a selected hardenable liquid infiltrant proximate the at least one surface and infiltrating the at least one preformed component with the selected hardenable liquid infiltrant. The method is characterised in that the barrier is provided by coating the at least one surface with a substantially non-wettable material and permitting the substantially non-wettable material to at least partially set into a hardened state, positioning the coated preformed component in a vessel and at least partially filling the vessel with granular material prior to the infiltrating of the at least one three-dimensional, preformed component.
