The invention relates to a method for preparing polyamides by reacting at least one lactam and optionally other polyamide-forming monomers with aqueous monomeric and oligomeric extracts obtained when the polymer is extracted with water in the production of polyamides, whereby the water content of the reaction mixture ranges from 0.5 to 13 percent by weight. According to said method, reaction is carried out in the presence of metal oxides, beta zeolites, sheet silicates or silica gels which may de doped as heterogeneous catalysts. The polyamide is treated in the first zone with an aqueous ε-caprolactam solution with 15-40 wt. % ε-caprolactam as extraction agent at 100 to 140 °C, and water is then used in the second zone as extraction agent at a temperature 5-40 °C lower. The process allows polyamides with a low monomer and oligomer content to be economically extracted.

A process for producing a polyamide by reacting at least one aminonitrile with water has the following steps: (1) at least one aminonitrile is reacted with water at a temperature from 100 to 360 °C and pressure from 0.1 to 35.x 106 Pa, yielding a reaction mixture; (2) the reaction mixture is further reacted at a temperature from 150 to 400 °C and pressure lower than the pressure in step 1. The temperature and pressure are selected to yield a first gaseous phase and a first liquid or solid phase or a mixture of a first solid and a first liquid phase. The first gaseous phase is separated from the first liquid or solid phase or the mixture of a first liquid and a first solid phase is separated; and (3) the first liquid or solid phase or the mixture of a first liquid and first solid phase is mixed with a water-containing gaseous or liquid phase at a temperature from 150 to 360 °C and pressure from 0.1 to 30 x 106 Pa, yielding a product mixture. Also disclosed are other embodiments of this process and the thus produced polyamides.

At least 0.7 equivalents of an alkaline metal and/or alkaline earth metal base per mole of the aspartic acid, aspartic acid imide and/or amide units contained in the polycondensates are used. The bases are added during 30 minutes to 20 hours to an aqueous suspension of the polycondensates of aspartic acid heated up to 40 to 140 °C, and the reaction mixture is optionally allowed to continue to react. These alkaline metal and/or alkaline earth metal salts of polyaspartic acids obtained by treating aspartic acid polycondensates in an aqueous medium with more than 1 equivalent of an alkaline metal and/or alkaline earth metal base for reducing the molar mass of polycondensates are used as additives for washing and cleaning agents.
