Disclosed is a carbamate functional silica, comprising repeating units: wherein R is H or an alkyl group of from 1 to 50 carbon atoms and n is a number from 1 to 100. Also disclosed is a functional silica comprising repeating units: wherein R is an alkyl group of from 1 to 50 carbon atoms, n is from 1 to 100, R1 and R2 may be the same or different and are at least one of a hydrocarbon group comprising from 1 to 100 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of R1 and R2 is not hydrogen. In one embodiment, R1 and R2 are hydrogen or the residual of an aminoplast polymer, an alkylating alcohol, or the like. Methods for making the disclosed functional silicas and coating compositions comprising the same are also provided.

The invention provides a polymer (a) having a polymer backbone having appended thereto at least one carbamate functional group, the polymer represented by randomly repeating units according to the formula: (I) R1 represents H or CH3, R2 represents H, alkyl, or cycloalkyl, L represents a divalent linking group, A represents repeat units comprising at least one repeat unit having a pendant cationic salting group, x represents 10 to 90 weight %, and y represents 90 to 10 weight %. The invention further provides a cathodic electrocoat coating composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a polymer (a) and (b) a compound having a plurality of functional groups that are reactive with said carbamate groups, wherein the repeat units A of polymer (a) having a pendant cationic salting group are salted with an acid. Finally, the invention provides a cathodic electrodeposition method requiring 1) immersing a conductive substrate in a coating composition comprising, in an aqueous medium, a polymer (a) and (b) a compound having a plurality of functional groups that are reactive with said carbamate groups, 2) applying a voltage between an anode and the conductive substrate, and 3) removing the substrate from the coating composition.
Abstract:
The invention provides cathodic electrocoat compositions having a carbamate functional resin with a cationic salting site, a crosslinking agent reactive with the carbamate functional resin and a carbonate curing agent. The invention also provides methods of cathodically electrodepositing a coating on a substrate using the coating compositions of the invention. The compositions of the invention provide urethane crosslinking sites without the use of disadvantageous blocked isocyanates and cure at temperatures lower than prior art cathodic electrocoat compositions.

The present invention provides a curable coating composition that includes at least three components. The coating composition includes a component (a) that includes one or both of a compound (a)(1) having at least one carbamate group or terminal urea group according to the invention and having at least two linking groups that are urethane or urea or a compound (a)(2) having at least two groups selected from carbamate groups, terminal urea groups, or combinations of the two and at least four urethane or urea linking groups. The second component (b) of the coating composition includes an acrylic polymer comprising active hydrogen-containing functional groups reactive with the third component (c). Component (c) of the coating composition is a curing agent that is reactive with the first two components. Preparation of coated articles using the compositions of the invention is also disclosed.

A multicoat coating system that does not contain a primer layer over an electrodeposition coating layer. Even in the absence of the primer layer, the electrodeposition coating layer is protected from ultraviolet light by a basecoat layer that contains a UV blocking composition comprising at least two of carbon black, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and an aluminum pigment or mixtures of any these.

The invention provides composite color-plus-clear coatings having improved appearance, especially with respect to wrinkling, and to methods and compositions for providing such coatings. The method of the invention utilizes a second coating composition comprising (A) a film forming component comprising (a) a first component comprising a compound having appended thereto at least one carbamate or urea functional group, or a group convertible to a carbamate or urea group, and (b) a second component comprising a compound reactive with said carbamate or urea groups on component (a), (B) a cyclic anhydride, and (C) a catalyst.

The coating composition of the invention includes a polymer, especially an acrylic polymer, having hydroxyl and/or primary carbamate functionality; water-miscible organic solvent; low hydrogen bonding oxygenated solvent; and water that is emulsified in the organic phase. The coating composition of the invention may be a clearcoat coating composition, preferably an automotive clearcoat coating composition. The invention further provides an article, such as an automotive vehicle, having a surface coated with a coating derived from the coating composition of the invention, particularly a composite coating having a basecoat layer and clearcoat layer, and a method of producing such coating on a substrate, particularly as a basecoat/clearcoat composite coating, with the coating composition of the invention preferably being at least the clearcoat of the composite coating. The coating composition of the invention provides especially low volatile organic content, with significant reductions of 25 % or more from comparable previous coating compositions.
