The invention relates to copolymers which contain ethyl methacrylate, at least one α,β-ethylenically unsaturated compound containing amide groups, and at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid polymerised therein. The invention also relates to cosmetic and pharmaceutical agents containing at least one copolymer of said type, and to the use of said copolymers.

The present invention relates to the use of an anionic or cationic ampholytic copolymer which is obtainable by free-radical copolymerization of a1) at least one compound having a free-radically polymerizable, α,β-ethylenically unsaturated double bond and at least one anionogenic and/or anionic group per molecule, a2) at least one compound having a free-radically polymerizable, α,β-ethylenically unsaturated double bond and at least cationogenic and/or cationic group per molecule, b) at least one free-radically polymerizable crosslinking compound which contains at least two α,β-ethylenically unsaturated double bonds per molecule, c) if desired in the presence of at least one silicone compound containing a polyether group and/or a free-radically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated double bond, as rheology modifiers for compositions in hair cosmetology.

The invention relates to a process for preparing a polymer by free-radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and/or a salt thereof,at least one ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and/or an anhydride and/or a salt thereof,in the presence of hypophosphorous acid and/or a salt thereof. The invention also relates to a polymer composition obtainable by this process. The invention also relates to the use of such a polymer composition as detergent additive, e.g. as dispersant, scale inhibitor or sequestrant for laundry detergents.
