A positioning system, in particular, six-dimensions positioning system of a target comprising N light source(s) with respect to a shadow sensor, is provided. The sensor can be a shadow sensor and has a mask and a 2D imager. By recording the shadow of the mask cast by each light source on the imager, and by properly multiplexing the light sources, the system can compute the 6D position of the target with respect to the shadow sensor. This computation is based, in part, on treating the shadow of the mask cast on the imager as the equivalent of the projection of light in a pinhole camera.

Method of detection of visible defects in physical parts comprising: - providing an apparatus (1) comprising a hollow structure (2) adapted to receive a part (50), a plurality of light sources (3) distributed on the inside of the hollow structure (2), a camera (7) for imaging the part (50), and a controller (5) for selectively illuminating at least a portion of said light sources (3) in predetermined combinations at predetermined intensities and for actuating said camera (7); said method comprising an operational phase comprising the steps of: - providing a part (50) to be tested in the interior of said enclosure; - illuminating the part (50) to be tested with the light sources (3) in said predetermined combinations at said predetermined intensities; - imaging the part (50) to be tested synchronously with illuminating said part (50) to be tested, thereby obtaining a number n of original test images (51); - processing said original test images to detect visible defects in said part to be tested. This computation is based, in part, on treating the shadow of the mask cast on the imager as the equivalent of the projection of light in a pinhole or projective camera. In one embodiment, the system is applied in a surgical domain. In another embodiment, the system is rapidly deployed.
