The invention relates to a tread (1) for heavy-goods vehicle tire having a total width W and a thickness of wear material PMU, wherein said tread has at least four circumferential grooves (2, 2') on either side of an equatorial median plane, wherein said grooves (2, 2') divide the tread into a median region, which is defined as the region located between the two axially closest circumferential grooves on either side of the median region, intermediate regions arranged axially on either side of the central region and edge regions axially defining the tread, wherein the median region has an axial width Lm between 30% and 60% of the total width W, wherein the total void ratio of the new tread is less than 17% and that of the median region is less than half this value. The median region comprises a plurality of transverse or oblique cuts (6) that open in the circumferential grooves and have a depth ≥ 75% of that of said circumferential grooves, wherein the number of cuts (6) in the median region along a full rotation of the tire is greater than the number of cuts that may be present on each other intermediate or edge region.
