The invention relates to a brake system for motor vehicles which is preferably operated in a "brake-by-wire" operating mode. The brake system comprises, among other things, a master brake cylinder (2), an electrically controllable pressure source (5) which delivers a brake system pressure, and a first hydraulic module (200), and comprises, inter alia, an inlet valve (6a-6d) and an outlet valve (7a-7d) per wheel brake (8, 9, 10, 11) for setting wheel-individual brake pressures which are derived from the brake system pressure, wherein the inlet and outlet valves (6a-6d, 7a-7d) deliver or forward the brake system pressure when they are not actuated.
