As a mobile display device, a translucent liquid crystal panel is a highly user-friendly display device capable of obtaining a clear image both in a dark place and a light place. However, it is expected to obtain a light-weight and robust display device of lower power consumption , i.e., having the advantages of the transparent type and reflection type liquid crystal panel. A liquid crystal panel having a back surface light emission light source includes: a liquid crystal element formed on a first basic body and sandwiching a liquid crystal element between a transparent first electrode and a transparent second electrode which are arranged to oppose each other; and a back surface light emission light source of the liquid crystal element formed on a second basic body and sandwiching a thin film planar light emitting element between an optically opaque third electrode and a transparent fourth electrode which are arranged to oppose each other. The third electrode is a reflection film arranged on the second basic body side and reflecting external light coming through the liquid crystal layer so as to introduce it into the liquid crystal layer. The fourth electrode is arranged to oppose to the second electrode. The insulation film sandwiched by the fourth electrode and the second electrode is a film formed continuously on the fourth electrode.

A conventional liquid crystal display comprises a number of components, so that a manufacturing cost cannot be reduced. Furthermore, a large-area substrate has problems in shipping. According to this invention, a liquid-crystal panel is prepared by forming individual optically functional films, a TFT device and a light-emitting device on a long thin film and then laminating the film by a transfer process. A base film to be a substrate in a liquid-crystal panel preferably has a thickness of 10 µm to 200 µm, a curvature radius of 40 mm or less as a measure of flexibility and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 50 ppm/°C or , less. Furthermore, it more preferably gives a variation of ±5 % or less in mechanical and optical properties to a thermal history at 200 °C.

A conventional liquid crystal display includes many components to thereby make it difficult to reduce production costs. In addition, a large-area substrate poses transportation problems. A liquid crystal panel is produced by forming respective optical function film/TFT element and light emitting element on a long thin-film-form film of organic resin and laminating the films by transferring. A base film serving as the substrate of a liquid crystal panel preferably has a thickness of 10 to 200 μm, a flexibility with a radius of curvature of up to 40 mm, and a thermal expansion coefficient of up to 50 ppm/°C. In addition, it more preferably undergoes mechanical and optical characteristics changes of up to ±5 % after a heat history of at least 200 °C.
