The invention relates to a method for controlling at least one safety-relevant component of a motor vehicle, especially an automobile, depending on the driving dynamics of the motor vehicle detected via sensors. The safety-relevant component is activated depending on at least one threshold value that is predefined and adaptable or characteristic of driving safety-critical driving dynamics in such a manner that the risk of a vehicle occupant and/or collision partner of being injured is reduced. According to the invention, the adaptation of the threshold value is coupled to the performance required by the driver in such a manner that the safety-relevant component is activated only if safety-critical driving dynamics resulting from the performance currently required by the driver is rated as involuntary and unchecked driving. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle which comprises such a safety system.

The driving state data is monitored in relation to an emergency braking situation, and if an emergency braking situation is identified, the passenger protection system is actuated. The belt retractor being interlocked in response to a dangerous condition and said dangerous condition being perceived as being over, the operation of the belt retractor is controlled by a release signal at a releasing time, so as to release the lock unwinding the belt and shift it from a locked condition to a comfort-providing condition. The invention is characterized in that the release time is determined by means of a sensor model algorithm based on an acceleration sensor model, from at least one measurable quantity characteristic of the running dynamics.
