Disclosed herein are processes for polymerizing ethylene, acyclic olefins, and/or selected cyclic olefins, and optionally selected olefinic esters or carboxylic acids, and other monomers. The polymerizations are catalysed by selected transition metal compounds, and sometimes other co-catalysts. Since some of the polymerizations exhibit some characteristics of living polymerizations, block copolymers can be readily made. Many of the polymers produced are often novel, particularly in regard to their microstructure, which gives some of them unusual properties. Numerous novel catalysts are disclosed, as well as some novel processes for making them. The polymers made are useful as elastomers, molding resins, in adhesives, etc. Also described herein is the synthesis of linear α-olefins by the oligomerization of ethylene using as a catalyst system a combination of a nickel compound having a selected α-diimine ligand and a selected Lewis or Bronsted acid, or by contacting selected $(a)-diimine nickel complexes with ethylene.

Certain nickel [II] complexes of selected orthophosphine substituted arylsulfonamides or selected phosphine containing alkylsulfonamides catalyze the polymerization of ethylene. The polymers produced may be used as lubricants or in waxes. Some of these nickel [II] complexes and the phosphine containing ligands are also novel compounds.

Olefin polymerizations employing a complex of a Group 8, 9, or 10 transi-tion metal with a bidentate ligand as part of the polymerization catalyst system are improved by adding to the polymerization a silicon compound in which at least one atom of a Group 15 or 16 element is bound to a silicon atom. The polymerizations often have increased polymer productivity and/or the polymerization catalyst has a longer half life.

Ethylene and allyl- or vinylsilanes are efficiently copolymerized by certain late transition metal complexes containing selected bidentate or tridentate ligands. The resulting novel polymers may be crosslinked by moisture when vinylsilane contains groups bound to silicon which are hydrolyzable. The polymers are useful for wire coating, crosslinked foams, pipes, and other uses.

Mixtures of different polyolefins may be made by direct, preferably simultaneous, polymerization of one or more polymerizable olefins using two or more transition metal containing active polymerization catalyst systems, one of which contains nickel complexed to selected ligands. The polyolefin products may have polymers that vary in molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, crystallinity, or other factors, and are useful as molding resins and for films.

Novel iron and cobalt complexes of certain novel tricyclic ligands containing a “pyridine” ring and substituted with two imino groups are po-lymerization and/or oligomerization catalysts for olefins, especially ethyl-ene. Depending on the exact structure of the ligand, and polymerization process conditions, products ranging from a-olefins to high polymers may be produced. The polymers, especially polyethylenes, are useful for films and as molding resins.

Olefins containing selected functional groups such as silyl, ether and alkenyl, and often containing a blocking group, may be copolymerized with unsubstituted olefins such as ethylene and propylene in the presence of certain coordination compounds of nickel or palladium.
