摘要: Devices and methods are provided for temporarily inducing cardio-plegia arrest in the heart of a patient, and for establishing cardiopulmonary bypass in order to facilitate surgical procedures onthe heart and its related blood vessels. Specifically, a catheterbased system is provided for isolating the heart and coronary blood vessels of a patient from the remainder of the arterial system(850), and for infusing a cardio-plegia agent into the patient's coronary arteries to induce cardio-plegia arrest in the heart. The system includes an endo-aortic partitioning catheter (10) having an expandable balloon (11, 161) at its distal end, which is expanded within the ascending aorta (12, 157) to occlude the aortic lumen between the coronary ostia and the brachio-cephalic artery. Means for centering the catheter tip (330) within the ascending aorta include specially curved shaft configurations (1600), eccentric (710) or shaped (792) occlusion balloons (161, 350), and a steerable catheter tip (145) which may be used separately or in combination. The shaft of the catheter may have a coaxial (106) or multilumen (602) construction.

摘要: This invention is a method, a device for introduction of a catheter (6C), and/or delivering a fluid, such as oxygenated blood, to a patient's vascular system including a cannula (2C) having an expandable portion (4C). The expandable portion (4C) is movable from a collapsed position to an expanded position. The expandable portion (4C) is inserted into the patient in the collapsed position which facilitates introduction and advancement of the cannula (2C) through the patient's blood vessel. After introduction into the patient, the expandable portion (4C) is moved to the expanded position. The expandable portion (4C) protects the blood vessel against fluid forces when flowing a fluid through the cannula (2C), and protects the vessel from contact with the catheter (6C) advanced through the cannula (2C).

摘要: A cannula (372) having reinforced sections (386) and nonreinforced sections (388), the nonreinforced sections (388) having openings (390) communicating with the lumen of the cannula (372). The nonreinforced sections (388) are plain tubing and the reinforced sections (386) are formed by winding a coated elongate member (207) in a helical manner around a mandrel (213). The coated elongate member (207) preferably has a square cross-sectional shape so that adjacent portions of the coated elongate member (207) engage one another when the coated elongate member (207) is wound around the mandrel (213). The coated elongate member (207) is then heated so that the coating (229, 231) on adjacent portions of the coated elongate member (207) fuses together to form an integral structure. Another layer of material (225) may be provided on the radially inner or outer wall of the coated elongate member. The resulting tubular body (205) is reinforced by the elongate member (207) which is encased in the fused coating (229, 231). The tubular body (205) is cut into sections which are fused to the plain tubing sections (388) to form the cannula.
