A car body for railway rolling stock has a plurality of outside plates (20,21) joined to frame members (12-15) by spot welding. The outside plates are joined to their frame members at least at all their periphery by spot welding. The outside plates are produced of ferrous materials, exclusive of stainless steels. On the outside surface of these outside plates is formed a coating. The outside plates are joined to each other without continuous welding. Because the joining of the outside plates to the frame members and the joining of the outside plates to each other is performed all by spot welding, lessinput heat is required as compared with the continuous welding. Therefore, outside plate distortion can be reduced and it is possible to decrease the time and labour for the manufacture of the car body. As the outside plates are produced of a ferrous material, the painting of the outside surfaces can easily be performed.

In conventional bodies, not much consideration has been given with respect to the reduction in weight of the underframe (10) and the improvement of rigidity. The present invention provides a railway car body of reduced weight and which can withstand a variation of external pressure by provision of a construction in which the underframe (10) under the car body has a curved surface having at least one or more radii of curvature across the width of the car body.

The present invention therefore proposes that a shearing rigidity in respect to a vertical load in the portion near the body bolster (A) of a light weight car body (1) is made larger than that of the portion other than a portion near the body bolster (A). That is, a shearing rigidity in respect to the vertical load of a portion near the portion of body bolster (A) of the car body (1) is improved and the portion other than the portion near the body bolster (A) of the car body (1) has a sufficient bending rigidity in the same manner as that of the prior art structure.

The body structure of a railway vehicle is constructed by assembling roof panels (11), eaves panels (12), window header panels (13) and such like. Each panel is provided with framing shapes in its periphery, and the contiguous framing shapes of the adjacent panels are joined together by welding. Fixture holding members (31,32) for holding fixtures, such as a central ceiling holding member (31) and side ceiling holding members (32), are attached to the framing shapes, and fixtures and equipment including ceiling boards and lighting fixtures are fastened to the fixture holding members, respectively. This enables reliable, secure and easy attachment of the fixtures and equipment.
