The disclosure relates to a railway car body structure adapted to run at a high speed, and a production method thereof. To reduce vibration and noise and to prevent influences of outdoor pressure variations on passengers in the case of a high-speed railway car, the weight of the car body structure must be reduced and its pressure resistance must be improved. Each of the side constructions (2), roof construction (4) end constructions (5) and floor plates of an underframe (3) is constituted by plate members obtained by joining two surface sheet materials, a core material e.g. honeycomb sheet, and elongate joining members and through metal-to-metal bonding, the sheet thickness of the surface material on an outdoor side being made greater than that of the surface material on an indoor side. Also described is a production method of a body structure wherein the plate members are constituted as a block and a plurality of blocks are joined so as to constitute the side constructions, roof construction or the floor plates of the underframe described above.

In conventional bodies, not much consideration has been given with respect to the reduction in weight of the underframe (10) and the improvement of rigidity. The present invention provides a railway car body of reduced weight and which can withstand a variation of external pressure by provision of a construction in which the underframe (10) under the car body has a curved surface having at least one or more radii of curvature across the width of the car body.

A car body for railway rolling stock has a plurality of outside plates (20,21) joined to frame members (12-15) by spot welding. The outside plates are joined to their frame members at least at all their periphery by spot welding. The outside plates are produced of ferrous materials, exclusive of stainless steels. On the outside surface of these outside plates is formed a coating. The outside plates are joined to each other without continuous welding. Because the joining of the outside plates to the frame members and the joining of the outside plates to each other is performed all by spot welding, lessinput heat is required as compared with the continuous welding. Therefore, outside plate distortion can be reduced and it is possible to decrease the time and labour for the manufacture of the car body. As the outside plates are produced of a ferrous material, the painting of the outside surfaces can easily be performed.
