A failure diagnosis apparatus for a throttle valve actuating device is disclosed. The throttle valve actuating device has an actuator for actuating a throttle valve provided in an intake system of an internal combustion engine and biasing elements for biasing the throttle valve to a predetermined retention opening. A feedback control of the throttle valve is performed so that an opening of the throttle valve coincides with a first predetermined opening. After the throttle valve is controlled to the first predetermined opening, a feedback control of the throttle valve is performed so that an opening of the throttle valve coincides with a second predetermined opening. It is determined that the throttle valve actuating device has failed when the time period during which the opening of the throttle valve remains in a predetermined determination range including the second predetermined opening, is shorter than a predetermined time period when performing the feedback control to the second predetermined opening.

There are provided a failure determination device for determining failure of a humidity sensor that detects the humidity of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine and a control system for an exhaust passage changeover valve. In one form of the invention, it is judged based on a detected operating condition of the engine whether or not the engine is in an operating condition in which failure determination of the humidity sensor can be executed. It is then determined whether or not the humidity sensor has failed, based on a result of detection by the humidity sensor. In another form of the invention, a changeover valve switches an exhaust passage having a catalytic device arranged therein, between a main exhaust passage and a bypass exhaust passage and having an adsorber arranged therein which is capable of adsorbing hydrocarbons and water. A humidity sensor is arranged at a location downstream of the adsorber in the bypass exhaust passage, for detecting humidity of the exhaust gases guided into the bypass exhaust passage. The changeover valve is driven based on a result of the detection.

There are provided a failure determination device simple in construction and capable of properly determining failure of a humidity sensor that detects the humidity of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine and a control system for an exhaust passage changeover valve, which can switch the changeover valve with appropriate timing, thereby enabling sufficient purification of exhaust gases. In one form of the invention, an operating condition of the engine is detected. It is judged based on the detected operating condition of the engine whether or not the engine is in an operating condition in which failure determination of the humidity sensor can be executed. It is determined whether or not the humidity sensor has failed, based on a result of detection by the humidity sensor, when it has been judged that the failure determination of the humidity sensor can be executed. A catalyst state detector for detecting a state of an exhaust gas purifying catalyst which is capable of accurately detecting the state, including deterioration, of an HC adsorbent (7) contained in the exhaust gas purifying catalyst for adsorbing hydrocarbons in exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine (1), and can be manufactured at a low cost. The exhaust gas purifying catalyst (5) is arranged at an intermediate portion of an exhaust pipe (4), and the HC adsorbent (7) is capable of adsorbing hydrocarbons and moisture in exhaust gases. The catalyst state detector comprises a downstream humidity sensor (22) arranged at a location downstream of the HC adsorbent (7) in the exhaust pipe (4) for detecting a humidity of the exhaust gases, and an adsorbent state detecting unit (ECU) for detecting the state of the HC adsorbent (7) in accordance with the result of detection made by the downstream humidity sensor (22).
