A graphite fibril material comprised primarily of an aggregate of an average particle diameter of 0.1 to 100 mu m in which fibrils are intertwinned, the fibrils being graphite fibrils of a fiber diameter of 0.0035 to 0.075 mu m and spacing of the carbon hexagonal net plane as determined by the X-ray diffraction method of 3.36 to 3.53 angstroms. It is of high crystallinity and purity and is of superior conductivity, chemical stability, solvent absorption capacity and reinforcing capacity.

It has now been found that highly advantageous three-dimensional, macroscopic assemblages of randomly oriented carbon fibrils can be prepared which have relatively uniform physical properties along one, preferably two and most desirably three-dimensional axis of the three-dimensional assemblage. Preferred compositions prepared according to the methods of the invention have uniform physical properties along at least one dimensional axis and have relatively isotropic physical properties in at least one plane of the assemblage and most desirably are isotropic throughout the entire three-dimensional structure.

A rubber composition containing carbon fibrils in which 0.5 to 60parts by weight of carbon fibril material comprised primarily of an aggregate of fibrils having an average particle diameter of 0.05 to 50 νm in which fine, filiform carbon fibrils of 3.5 to 75 nm in diameter are intertwined with each other is mixed with 99.5 to 40 parts by weight of synthetic rubber and/or natural rubbher and a pneumatic tire in which the surface layer is provided with this rubber composition. Vulcanized rubber of high hardness, high strength, high wear resistance and conductivity can be obtained while processing capacity is maintained. In addition, the tires can be made ligther.
