An axial gap rotating electrical machine in which the distance of the air gap between a rotor and a stator can be accurately controlled is provided. A large diameter portion and a small diameter portion are formed on a rotating shaft and a stepped portion is formed therebetween. A rotor yoke is secured thereon and the position of the rotor is determined. The position of a bearing secured in a housing for rotatably supporting the rotating shaft is determined by a boss portion of the rotor yoke. The position of the housing is determined by the position of the bearing and the securing position of the stator is thereby determined by a stepped portion formed on the inner circumference of the housing. Thus the position of the housing relative to the rotating shaft can be determined from the position of the rotor and the securing position of the stator can be determined in this state. Therefore, the distance of the air gap between the stator and the rotor can be accurately obtained.

With this stator core (17a), it is only necessary to annularly wind a stator winding (17b). The present invention provides a compact electric motor, thus ensuring improved in-vehicle mountability. A pump is driven by all motor. The pump has a coil 14 deposed in a ring form around and along a stator core 13. The stator core 13 has a plurality of claw magnetic poles which extend alternately from both ends of one member of the stator core 13 toward the of the other member thereof. The electric motor drives the pump by rotating a rotor 16 disposed to face the inner of the stator core 13 as the coil 14 is energized. The present invention provides a compact electric pump with no coil ends, thus ensuring improved in-vehicle mountability. Further, the present invention permits efficient cooling of the electric motor adapted to discharge a cooling medium. Still further, the present invention permits use of a stator core made from a compressed powder core by molding with resin. In addition, the molded portion also serves as a partition separating pump and motor units.
