A system, apparatus and method is described for dynamically boosting (increasing) the power supply voltage to an envelope tracking (ET) modulator within a transmitter system when the target/desired power amplifier voltage supply is above a predetermined threshold (e.g., equal to the available power supply of the system, such as a battery). By boosting the power input supply to the ET modulator, the modulated power supply provided to the power amplifier (PA) is also increased. This reduces or eliminates clipping that normally occurs when the target/desired PA supply voltage is greater than the available power supply voltage and reduces distortion in the transmitted signal.

An apparatus and method for sensing load current of an envelope tracking (ET) modulator enables load impedance of a power amplifier to be measured. Impairments associated with the load impedance characteristic can be suppressed by calibration and predistortion instead of by feedback (as done in the prior art). The ET modulator provides a switching regulator that can be reconfigured as a linear regulator for the purpose of sensing the load current. This allows the ET modulator to be operated open-loop, thereby eliminating the power consumption overhead resulting from utilization of a loop filter and error amplifier (used in the prior art) and achieving a higher overall efficiency.

An apparatus and method are provided for setting a local oscillator duty ratio based on an image distortion level. A first signal is transmitted utilizing a first X-phase path of a transmitter. Further, an image distortion level is measured in connection with the first signal. Based on the measurement, a duty ratio of a local oscillator is set, for reducing a distortion in connection with a transmission of a second signal utilizing a second Y-phase path of the transmitter.
