R 2 , R 3 and R 4 each represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl group containing from I to 4 carbon atoms, R 5 and R 6 each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from I to 4 carbon atoms, and R 7 and R 8 each represent an alkyl group containing from I to 4 carbon atoms or R 7 and R 8 together with the adjacent nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring which may optionally contain an additional hetero atom; and acid addition salts thereof.

    摘要： An improved process for preparing imidazole and 1 ,2,4-triazole derivatives comprises the steps of:-
    (a) reacting a β-keto ester R 1 -CO-CH 2 COOR with a a-halo ketone R 2 COCH 2 X where X = halogen, (b) hydrolysing the diketo ester to a diketone R 1 COCH 2 CH 2 COR (c) oxidising the diketone esterto an unsaturated diketone (d) reacting the unsaturated diketone with imidazole or 1,2,4-triazole (e) selectively reducing the product of (d) to give a compound offormula:
    wherein R' and R 2 are optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl.
