摘要:
Apparatus (110) for injecting substances into molten metal includes a nozzle block (111) for installation in the wall of a vessel, the nozzle block having at least one initially-closed injection passage and an injectant pipe (114) movable in the passage and advanceable to open the passage for injection ot commence. Melt-arresting means (135) are provided in the vicinity of the respective discharge ends of the pipe and passage to limit run back of molten metal in a space between the lance pipe (114) and the passage when the pipe has been advanced to its injection position, the arresting means (135) defining a clearance which affords advancing movement of the pipe but is so small as to prevent significant flow of metal through the clearance. In case melt is not arrested by the arresting means (135), a compressible melt-impervious seal means (127) is provided adjacent an outer end of the pipe.

An injection nozzle (10) is installed in the wall (13) of a liquid containment vessel (14) and comprises an assembly of refractory component bodies (18, 19, 20); injection passages (22) for receiving longitudinally movable lances (11) are provided in the nozzle and before injection commences, the passages are closed by cup-shaped refractory shells (30) embedded in one of the component bodies (18) adjacent a discharge end of the nozzle. Each shell has its base (31) united through a frangible shell portion (34) with the sidewall (32) and when injection is to commence, an associated lance (11) is forcibly driven at the base (31) to detach it by fracture of the shell portion (34) and form an opening through which an injectant can exit into the liquid. A push-out bung (26) may be incorporated in the nozzle body (18) between the base of the shell (30) and the discharge end of the nozzle (10).

A wire or rod (W) of alloying or treatment substance is fed with gas into a liquid, e.g. metal melt, through a passage in the wall of a vessel (930) containing the liquid. In the passage there is a tube (921) along which the wire (W) passes. Before commencing to introduce the wire (W) to the liquid, the tube (921) has an obturator (910) frictionally fitted at its liquid-confronting end, and the wire is set back from the obturator. The obturator has a nose portion (911) approximately the same diameter as the wire (W) and legs (912) diverging from one another to engage the tube (921). The obturator (910) ensures that before the wire (W) enters the liquid, gas exits from the tube (921) at a speed such that it jets rather than bubbles into the liquid, thereby preventing the liquid from entering the tube. The wire thrusts the obturator (910) into the liquid and then enters itself.

To obtain a sample of molten metal from a vessel, e.g. for analysis, a refractory block 14 is installed in a wall (11) of the vessel and is traversed by at least one passage (15) temporarily closed by a frangible or dislodgeable closure (20) at the melt end thereof. After filling the vessel with metal, a rigid elongated pipe (21) movable lengthwise in the passage is placed therein, the pipe being operatively connected with a sample mould (22). To obtain a sample, the pipe (21) and mould (22) are advanced forcibly in a forward direction, so that a forward end of the pipe (21) strikes and breaks or dislodges the closure (20). Molten metal then gains access to the pipe (21) and is free to flow along the pipe to enter the mould (22). After leaving sufficient time for the melt in the mould (22) to freeze or become pasty, the mould (22) is removed from the pipe (21) e.g. by a shearing means (48) and the sample is extracted from the mould for evaluation.

For injecting substances into a liquid e.g. molten metal, a nozzle block (21) is mounted in the wall of a vessel (13) containing the liquid. Initially, an injection passage (11) extending through the block is closed by a plug (22) to prevent ingress of liquid, and only when injection is to commence, is the plug (22) thrust aside by a delivery pipe (24) movable in the passage (11), the pipe (24) forming part of an injection lance assembly. The positions of the lance assembly before and after injection are determined by a safety stop arrangement for example comprising a detent in the form of a spring-loaded plunger (60) housed in a fixed part (32) of the apparatus; the plunger coacts with front and rear ramps (65, 66) of an abutment (64) which is fast with part (25) of the lance assembly, to govern the positions of the lance assembly before and after injection.

Gas injection into a metal melt, accompanied if desired by powdered or solid treatment substances, is by way of a nozzle (14) inserted into the wall (12) of a melt-containing vessel (10). The nozzle bore (18) initially has a stopper (20) at its inner end and a delivery pipe (24) smaller than the bore (18) is movable therein. Before injection, the pipe (24) and bore (18) adjacent the stopper (20) are cooled by gas. By thrusting the pipe (24) against the stopper (20) while sufficient gas flow and pressure is maintained, the stopper is dislodged and the gas will enter the melt as a jet which leaves the pipe (24) at a velocity equalling or exceeding Mach 0.5. Melt enters the clearance between the pipe (24) and bore (18) but, due to the pre-injection cooling, rapidly freezes locking the pipe safely in the bore.

For introducing gases, wires and powders to metal melts, a multi-ducted refractory body (11) is installed in the wall (14) of a vessel (15) for the melt. The body has passage closing elements (24, 34, 35) preventing melt entering the passages (A, B, C). Two passages (A and C) serve respectively for introducing gas, and fluidised powders, to the melt; each has a movable pipe (36, 91) (for gas or fluidised powder). Upon moving gas pipe (36) towards the melt, it dislodges closing element (24) whereby gas from the pipe can enter the melt via capillary bores (25). Similarly, by moving pipe (91), closing element (35) is dislodged whereby the fluidised powder can discharge from the pipe (91). Wire is fed along passage (B) to the melt: when it reaches the closing element (34) the wire can itself dislodge this element to gain access to the melt. A method of introducing substances to liquids related to use of this apparatus is disclosed, as well as metallurgical processes involving the method.
