Two synthetic resin structural members (11) are connected by placing a connector (22) having a plurality of holes formed therein into engagement with the two members (11), drilling a hole in one of the members in a position corresponding to one of the holes in the connector and securing a blind rivet (23) in the aligned holes. The drilling and riveting steps are repeated until the required number of rivets have been secured in both the members. If one of the members is hollow, the connection to it of the connector may be supplemented or replaced by a bolt (32) which passes through the connector and through the hole in a sleeve which is received in opposed holes in the wall of the hollow member. The nut is then tightened and the sleeve prevents the walls of the hollow member being deformed inwardly.

A cooling tower includes a water vessel (5) in whose base a plurality of water spray ports is formed and below which there is one or more heat exchange units (16) comprising a plurality of heat exchange plates (17) extending substantially parallel to one another to define flow passages therebetween. Ambient air is drawn by an axial flow fan (2) through openings in the side of the cooling tower and then transversely through the flow passages to cool water flowing down the heat exchange members which has been sprayed out through the water spray ports. Certain of the flow passages (24) communicate exclusively with selected water spray ports, whereby water flowing through the other water spray ports may not enter the said certain flow passages. The flow of water through the selected water spray ports is controlled, e.g. by valves (41) so that in adverse weather conditions no water is permitted to flow through certain of the flow passages. The air flowing through these flow passages is therefore dry heated and its moisture content is not increased. This dry heated air is subsequently mixed with wet heated air which has flowed through the other flow passages and the moisture content of the air which is subsequently discharged to the atmosphere is maintained at a sufficiently low level that it does not condense and no visible steam is thus produced.

A cooling tower for cooling a liquid includes a cooling fan (4) arranged to pass air through the cooling tower, hydraulic motor (12) connected to rotate the fan, a pump (14), which is operated by a motor (13) and is connected to the hydraulic motor via a hydraulic supply line (18A) which includes a flow control valve (16), a temperature detector (20) for detecting the temperature of the liquid cooled within the cooling tower and a controller (24) arranged to compare the detected temperature with a predetermined temperature and to control the flow control valve in dependence on the difference between the detected and predetermined temperatures. The pump (14) is of variable capacity type and a capacity regulator (25) is associated with the pump (14) and arranged to vary the capacity of the pump to maintain a predetermined pressure differential between the pressures on the upstream and downstream sides of the flow control valve (16).

A bearing-pressure damping member (15) is fitted into each bolt hole formed in the members. The axes of bolts (16) fitted in the holes extend alternately in mutually perpendicular directions. Due to damping action resulting from elastic deformation of the damping members, a load is substantially evenly disitributed over all the bolts to prevent concentration of the load on some of the bolts. The arrangement of the bolts with their axes extending alternately in mutually perpendicular two directions shortens the length of the joint member.
