Exhaust gas purification system has a direct-reduction nitrogen oxide catalyst for purifying nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas and a catalyst-attached diesel particulate filter (DPF) for purifying particulate matter (PM) in exhaust gas, arranged upstream to the exhaust gas flow path. The oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is made almost zero and the exhaust gas temperature is raised. An air supply system is provided for supplying air between the NOx catalyst and the DPF, during deactivated catalyst reactivation treatment due to sulfur poisoning of the NOx catalyst.
