A method for enhanced uplink (EU) communication during soft handover implemented in a Node-B operating as a primary Node-B. The Node-B receives information from a radio network controller (RNC) and uses the information to determine uplink scheduling information including the maximum transmission power of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The Node-B transmits to the WTRU the uplink scheduling information, wherein the uplink scheduling information is not transmitted to the WTRU by any non-primary Node-B. The Node-B receives an EU data packet from the WTRU and performs a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) on the EU data packet. The Node-B transmits an acknowledgment (ACK) or a negative acknowledgment (NACK) to the WTRU in response to the received EU data packet. Further, the Node-B transmits a successfully received EU data packet to the RNC.

The user equipment receives and recovers signaled information of code and timeslot assignments of the user equipment to support a radio frequency communication. From the signaling information, an identifier of a plurality of assigned timeslots and an indication of a first and last code of a set of consecutive codes are recovered. The last code is identified by an identifier associated with the last code, and the same set of consecutive codes is assigned to each of the plurality of assigned timeslots.

A wireless digital communication method for communicating between a base station (12) and a plurality of user equipment mobile terminals (UEs 30) and employs adaptive modulation and coding to achieve improved radio resource utilization and provide optimum data rates for user services. Blocks of downlink (DL) data are received by the base station which requests downlink DL channel quality measurements only from those mobile terminals (30) with pending downlink transmissions. The UEs respond to the request by measuring and reporting DL Channel quality to the base station, which then allocates resources such that the UEs will make best use of radio resources. The base station notifies the UEs of the physical channel allocation indicating the modulation/coding rate and allocated slots followed by transmission of blocks of downlink data which are transmitted to the UEs.

A method for improving the reliability of a channel quality indicator (CQI) message in a wireless communications network begins with receipt of the CQI message. The CQI message is then decoded, and a decision metric value for each symbol in the CQI message is computed. A largest decision metric value and a second largest decision metric value for the CQI message are determined. The reliability of the CQI message can be determined by comparing the two largest decision metric values. This method may be applicable to high-speed downlink packet access in time division duplex, frequency division duplex, or other modes of transmission.
