摘要:
A record carrier (1) comprises essentially circular tracks (20) concentrically located around a point of rotation (2). The record carrier (1) is divided into circular zones (4, 5, 6) comprising each m tracks (22), with m being an integer. Each track within a zone is subdivided into n sectors (8), with n being an integer which is constant per zone and which increases as the zone is more remote from the point of rotation (2). Each sector (8) comprises a header portion (9) and a data portion. The header portions (9) in radial direction in each zone are in line. In each zone the condition of m.n = l.k is satisfied, with l being an integer greater than or equal to 2 and being constant for each zone, and with k being an integer.

An optical disk 10 has groups of features (such as depressed areas) arranged in a servo pattern disposed in a plurality of circumferentially spaced sectors, and with a flat, non-grooved surface inbetween. Each even sector 15b includes a plurality of features formed in an arrangement which is the complement and/or reversal in order circumferentially of their arrangement in the intervening odd sectors 15a. A single photodetector 36 senses the change in amplitude of reflected light as a spot from a laser passes over one of the features and generates position sensing signals corresponding to the pattern. At least three phases of the position sensing signal are generated for each sector. Each phase is determined by edges on the disk offset circumferentially with respect to each other and separated radially from each other by a critical distance. Errors caused by variations in pattern size and/or radial velocity of an optical head as it moves generally radially of the disk are reduced.

A track-seeking system for an optical disk using a velocity control loop with partially-digitized velocity measurement is described in which the sample period of the position error signal is varied in accordance with a velocity profile and a gain of the digital circuits is adjusted, also in accordance with the velocity profile, for providing optimum operation of the digitized portion of the velocity signal generator. In another aspect of the velocity-signal generation, the same digital circuit generates a velocity reference signal and a velocity error signal from a common desired velocity profile set of values.

Storage capacity of a magnetic recording medium is increased by providing a nonconductive layer 11 over a magnetic layer 12 on which magnetic data 17 is writable in a series of recording tracks 17, and applying a pattern of electrostatic charges 21 to the nonconductive layer above at least one of the recording tracks 26 to write track-position-denoting servo information in overlying relation to magnetic data. The pattern may be applied by electrostatic charges selectively of negative or positive polarity that are imprinted while the medium is in a mold or advanced over an electro-photographic charge transfer drum, for thereby preprinting the pattern as a step in fabrication of the medium.

An optical data storage system records pulse width modulated data as a series of contiguous and overlapping circular marks. A minimum number of circular marks are used to record the desired run length. Circular marks which overlap by greater or equal to one half the diameter of the circular mark are recorded using two different laser power levels. The result is that thermal buildup in the medium is kept to a minimum and the edge transitions are accurately positioned.

A discrete track magnetic record disk is provided with a plurality of angularly spaced servo sectors (18), each sector being formed of a plurality of discrete blocks (32, 34, 36, 38) of magnetic material which are magnetically polarised in the disk's circumferential direction. These discrete servo blocks (32, 34, 36, 38) and the discrete magnetic tracks (20, 22, 24) are formed at the same time during the fabrication of the record disk so that each servo block is precisely and permanently radially aligned with an associated discrete data track. Following the fabrication of the disk, each of the servo blocks is exposed to the magnetic field generated by passing a direct current (DC) through a recording head. In this manner each of the servo blocks becomes magnetised in the circumferential direction and thereby presents two discrete magnetic transitions to a servo read head or a read/write head.
